The Buick 3800 V6 started life as a V8 with two cylinders chopped off. In 1962, Buick took its 215-cubic-inch aluminum V8 — the same engine GM would sell to Rover, which would win two Formula 1 World Championships — and removed two cylinders. Cast the block in iron instead of aluminum. Called it the Fireball V6. 198 cubic inches. It powered the 1962 Buick Special. By 1964, displacement grew to 225 cubic inches. Then GM lost interest. In 1967, General Motors sold the tooling and manufacturing rights for the entire V6 program to Kaiser-Jeep, who renamed it the Dauntless 225 and installed it in CJ Jeeps because the engine was compact enough to fit where an inline-six couldn't. The V6 that Buick created and GM discarded was now a Jeep engine. Then the 1973 oil crisis hit. GM needed fuel-efficient engines immediately. They asked AMC (which had bought Jeep from Kaiser in 1970) to build the V6 for them again. AMC said no. But AMC agreed to sell the manufacturing rights back. GM bought back its own engine. The most circuitous development path of any engine in American history.
The reborn V6 returned to Buick in 1975 as a 231-cubic-inch (3.8-liter) engine. It became the foundation for the engine that would eventually be designated the 3800 — a name that simply described its displacement in cubic centimeters. The 90-degree V6 had an inherent problem: the cylinder bank angle was designed for a V8's firing intervals, not a V6's. A V6 needs 120-degree spacing between firing events for smooth operation. The 90-degree block produced unevenly spaced impulses that created a distinctive low rumble at idle. Critics called it rough. Owners called it character. GM initially used soft engine mounts to suppress the vibration rather than engineering a balance shaft. When a balance shaft was finally added in later versions, the 3800 became one of the smoothest V6 engines ever produced. But some enthusiasts missed the rumble.
The 3800 became GM's workhorse. It powered Buick LeSabres, Park Avenues, and Regals. Pontiac Grand Prix and Bonneville. Oldsmobile 88s. Chevrolet Impalas and Monte Carlos. The supercharged Series II 3800 in the 1997-2004 Buick Regal GS and Pontiac Grand Prix GTP made 240 HP and 280 lb-ft from the factory, and responded to a simple pulley swap and tune with 280 to 300 HP. The naturally aspirated version became legendary for longevity: 200,000 miles with nothing but oil changes and a belt was routine. 300,000 miles was documented. The 3800 was Ward's "Best Engine" multiple times, and in 2007 Ward's named it one of the ten best engines of the 20th century. Twenty-five million were built across all variants. Twenty-five million. More than any other V6 in American history.
The 3800 was never exciting. It was never the engine that made teenagers dream. Nobody put a poster of a Buick LeSabre on their bedroom wall. But the 3800 did something no exciting engine ever does: it worked perfectly for decades without complaint, without drama, and without expensive repairs. It started every morning in Minnesota winters. It survived Arizona summers. It towed boats. It commuted. It carried families. It did 200,000 miles and asked for nothing except oil and a timing cover gasket. The Buick 3800 is the most important engine in American automotive history that nobody considers important. Twenty-five million built. Four decades of production. Derived from a V8 that GM sold to Jeep and then bought back. The engine with character.
