Ever turned on your AC and caught a strange chemical smell you couldn't place?

That smell is one of the less obvious signs of a leaking evaporator core. Most people only notice when the air starts blowing warmer, or when a recharge fixes things for a few weeks before the cooling fades again. By then, the refrigerant has been slipping out of a part buried deep inside the dash.

That's what this Audi came in with. The evaporator lives inside the HVAC box behind the dashboard, so the dash, center console, and trim all had to come out to get to it. The second photo is the HVAC box after removal.

Which fluid do you think gets skipped the most? Brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid, or differential fluid?

Our vote goes to differential fluid. It sits out of sight, and most drivers don't think about it until they spot a drip under the back of the vehicle. This Lexus is in for a full differential service and reseal. Old fluid out, sealing surfaces cleaned, fresh sealant, and new gear oil going back in.

The good news: the gears inside still look great.

Be honest: when was the last time someone actually looked at your brake pads?

We found these during a recent inspection. New pads start with roughly 10 to 12mm of friction material, and most manufacturers recommend replacing them around 3mm. These were well past that, with very little left between the backing plate and the rotor.

Worn pads mean longer stopping distances, especially in a sudden stop. Once the friction material is gone, metal grinds against the rotor, and a pad replacement becomes a pad and rotor job.

Not every worn pad makes noise before it gets this bad, so a visual check is the only reliable way to know.

Guess how many hours it takes to pull an entire dashboard. Wrong answers only. 👇

This Toyota Sienna is in for a complete AC system refresh. To reach the evaporator, the whole dash has to come out, all the way down to the support beam and wiring harness.

It may be October, but Tomball is still sitting in the 80s. If your AC is blowing warm, cycling on and off, or smells musty at startup, now is the time to get it looked at before next summer's rush.

Van owners, what was the first thing that told you your suspension was worn out?

For some it's the nose dive every time you brake. For others it's the bounce over every expansion joint on 249, or a clunk you can't quite pin down.

Today we're refreshing the front end on a Ford Transit: new loaded struts, new control arms, and a full look at everything connected to them. Work vans and haulers put a lot of weight on these parts, and the wear usually creeps in so slowly you don't notice until it's fixed.

One 2-foot drop. That's all it took to shake this much dirt out of an engine air filter.

Quick honesty check: do you know when yours was last replaced? Guesses and confessions welcome in the comments.

Everything on that floor was sitting between the engine and the air it needs to run. A filter this loaded restricts airflow, which means the engine works harder to make the same power.

The good news is it's one of the quickest and least expensive services on any vehicle. We recommend checking it at every oil change, and most manufacturers call for replacement somewhere around 15,000 to 30,000 miles. Dusty roads and construction zones can shorten that.

honest, how many of you have grabbed a can of AC recharge off the parts store shelf this summer?

No judgment. It's mid September and Tomball still feels like July.

Here's the thing though. Your AC system is sealed. Refrigerant doesn't get used up, so if the system is low, it leaked out. Topping it off might buy you two weeks of cold air before it goes right back out the same hole it left through. A lot of those cans also carry stop leak and dye, which can gum up the system and make the real repair cost more than it needed to.

This F-150 came in blowing warm. Gauges are on it so we can see what the system is actually doing before anyone reaches for a can of anything.

Exhaust noise on this Jeep, and the cause was a previous repair that wasn't done right.

The joint was welded over rusted metal with no prep and no section replacement. Weld on top of rust doesn't hold, and this one had already cracked back open.

Doing it correctly means cutting out the rotted section back to solid pipe and welding in new material. It takes longer, and it's the only version that lasts.

Worth knowing, this isn't only a noise issue. Fumes can work into the cabin, and a leak ahead of the oxygen sensor can skew fuel trims and set a check engine light.

Customer came in for a noise while driving. Then we got it on the rack.

Look at the inside edge of that tire. Worn smooth, while the outside edge still has plenty of tread left.

Wear like that doesn't happen on its own. Something is holding that tire at an angle every mile it rolls, and once the inner edge goes, it starts putting out a hum that a lot of folks mistake for a bad wheel bearing.

Sound on. That is not road noise. That bearing is already toast.

This Chevrolet came in sounding like this. A bearing this far gone gets louder with speed, and it does not get better, it gets unsafe. At this point it is a replacement, not a wait and see.
