The temperature is heating up and everyone is ready for a vacation. 🏝 While you’re getting some much needed R&R, your vehicle is doing just the opposite and actually working harder in the hot summer months. Making sure your vehicle is properly maintained for summer will help prevent breakdowns and ensure your ultimate summer vacation is a success.

Summer Awareness

Timing Belt: Summer trips become quite a drag when you have a breakdown-which happens if your timing belt breaks! Replace your timing belt per the manufacturer’s recommended mileage interval to prevent a breakdown and potential engine damage. Doing so before your summer trip will help ensure vehicle dependability and safety.

Tires: Tires need special care in warmer weather as high temperatures put added stress on them. To maximize tire life and safety, check tire condition and inflation monthly. Hot weather increases pressure in tires, necessitating adjustments.

Windshield: Repair cracked or chipped windshields. Pre-existing chips spread in hot temperatures.

Battery: Excessive heat shortens battery life, causes power drain, and evaporates battery fluid. As corrosion accumulates on battery terminals, it becomes an insulator and inhibits current flow. Ensure your vehicle’s battery function and condition especially before a summer trip.

Cooling System and A/C Operation: The cooling system works harder during warmer temperatures to prevent overheating of the engine. Fresh and clean coolant helps prevent corrosion in the cooling system and assures the coolant has the proper boiling point. A properly functioning cooling system also ensures that your A/C blows cold.

Transmission: Heat is hard on transmissions and is the ultimate cause of transmission failure. Make sure transmission fluid is in good condition and the and level is full. Service dirty fluid to maximize the life of the transmission.

Belts & Hoses: These are essential components to cooling, A/C, charging systems, and the engine. Replacing worn out ones will help prevent becoming stranded. A blown hose can cause the engine to overheat.

Engine Oil: Oil is the blood of a vehicle’s engine and should be inspected and serviced multiple times throughout the year.

Spring Car Maintenance

Well, the winter is coming to an end and your vehicles have to acclimatize to a whole new set of challenges coming in the spring. The changing climate and weather could have profound impact on your car.

Here are some of the important car maintenance tips that you could implement this spring.

Salt removal:
Salt is a highly corrosive material and it is one of the most important components for keeping roads drivable during the winter. With constant contact with salt and ice, rust will quickly settle in without proper care or maintenance. One of the best ways to ensure minimal damage from salt is to completely rinsing your vehicle or giving a good wash. With extra care and polishing to the extremities and the bumpers, car could come right out of the winter mode.

Alignment and Suspension:
Winter is the time not known for its smooth rides or pothole free roads. Traversing on snow and broken roads could take its toll on your vehicle. Among the first things to be affected in your vehicle include wheel alignment and suspension. First things to do in spring would include checking your wheel alignment and suspension and paying special importance to repairing or replacing any wear and tear that might have taken place.

Clean interiors:
Winters often have strange way of getting into the interiors of your vehicle. The interiors of your vehicle could accumulate dampness and could develop mold. This could be further aggravated with many spring time issues. As we all know, spring is a time of allergies and infections and a damp car interior is a perfect breeding ground for allergies and sickness. Get your car's interiors thoroughly cleaned before spring and it would also make your ride all the more enjoyable.

Brake Inspections:
Brakes and brake devices would undergo a huge amount of stress along with wear and tear because of the constant exposure to the hard elements. The changing climate in many cases could damage your brake pads or even cause damage to the discs. Brake inspection, change of brake pads, and checking for brake fluids are very important before you start using your car in spring. Neglecting brake maintenance could cause expensive damages to the rotor and compromise the safety.

Perfection under the hood:
It is important to ensure that your vehicle has made it through the winter without developing any major damages. Give your vehicle a thorough check up under the hood. Check your turbo, all the different fluids including engine oil, coolants, and wiper fluids. It is advisable to change your engine oil and coolant especially after a harsh winter like we faced this year. It is always advisable to make these checks at professional mechanic but if you are comfortable with doing it yourself make sure you get it right.

❄️5 Winter Car Care Tips to keep your vehicle intact during the worst weather of the year. If you’re fortunate to live in a year-long warm climate, we’re jealous. However, for the rest of us the winter can be tough on your car.

Winter Car Car Tip #1: Consider getting snow tires

Snow tires are made of a softer rubber than all-season tires which allows them to retain flexibility, even in the coldest of cold. Tread patterns on these tires also allow for exceptional grip in the snow and ice.
However, snow tires aren’t a instant-fix. They won’t remove the chance of slipping and sliding in your car, but they do provide more traction than standard tires.

Winter Car Care Tip #2: Have your battery checked

The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. However, most motorists can perform routine care. If battery caps are removable, check fluid level monthly. A word of caution: Removal of cables can cause damage or loss of data/codes on some newer vehicles, so always check your owner’s manual first.
However, a bonus edition to our “Winter Car Care Tips” would be to have a professional inspect the battery. This would avoid any danger, or car issues, that can come from inspecting a battery.

Winter Car Care Tip #3: Change your oil and find the proper viscosity

This winter car care tip seems rather simple, however it is another tip that is easy to miss. The cold weather negatively effects oil’s effectiveness. The cold climates will make your oil thicker, reducing engine circulation.
This can be avoided by purchasing oil that is thinner than normal, most vehicles provide a winter oil viscosity (thickness) in the owner’s manual – along with other proper oil viscosity for the changing seasons.

Winter Car Care Tip #4: Check your fluid levels

Working windshield wipers and a solid supply of wiper fluid will ensure that you and your customers have visibility in the worst of snowstorms.
Wiper blades only last a year. If you think that it is time for a replacement, it likely is time for replacing them. Depending on how bad your winters are, you may want to equip your vehicle(s) with winter specialized wipers. Lastly, make sure your car(s) have wiper fluid with a low freezing point.

Winter Car Care Tip #5: Emergency Kit

Every car should be stocked with an emergency kit, just in case you encounter hazardous winter roads. You may want to keep the survival kit in the passenger compartment in case you go into a ditch and can’t get to or open the trunk. It’s good practice to keep everything in a plastic storage container, and place inside your vehicle when traveling. We’ve managed to narrow our list down to these 7 essential items:

Battery-powered radio & flashlight(with extra batteries), and extra cell phone battery

Blanket

Booster cables

Bottled water and nonperishable high-energy foods such as granola bars, raisins, and peanut butter.

Fire extinguisher (5-lb., A-B-C type)

First-aid kit and manual

Maps, shovel, flares.

This can be avoided by purchasing oil that is thinner than normal, most vehicles provide a winter oil viscosity (thickness) in the owner’s manual – along with other proper oil viscosity for the changing seasons.
However, a bonus edition to our “Winter Car Care Tips” would be to have a professional inspect the battery. This would avoid any danger, or car issues, that can come from inspecting a battery. If you are unsure and want it checked schedule your appointment today!
