For some motorcyclists, riding is about answering questions like "Can I make it up that hill?" "How fast can I take that corner?" Or "How far can I lean before the hard parts scrape?"

For others, the question is "How far can I ride in a day?"

If it seems like a frivolous concern to you, it isn’t to the more than 75,000 riders worldwide who have answered it by riding a SaddleSore 1000. Also known as the SS1K, it’s the shortest ride certified by the Iron Butt Association, the home base for the subset of riders for whom the torturous Iron Butt Rally - in which riders can cover 11,000 miles in 11 days - is the ultimate test of riding skills and personal endurance.

🏍️🎃 That’s a wrap on the 2026 Bike Night season! 🎃🏍️

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out to our Halloween Bike Night and Trunk or Treat tonight! It was awesome seeing the lot full of bikes, costumes, families, friends, and so many people just having a good time.

The costume contest was a blast and definitely brought some laughs, creativity, and a little friendly competition to the night. 😂🏆 Huge thanks to everyone who dressed up and joined in!

Motorcycle design has become stale. Stalled. The Superbike horsepower races are over or boring, the branches on the ADV tree are sagging with plump and overripe machines, and the small-bike craze has leveled into normalcy. Wings? Yawn. Huge TFT screens? Meh. Radar systems? In this economy? And no, dammit, I don’t want another round headlight; what is this, 2014?

There’s arguably only one place in motorcycling where a wildfire of R&D activity has broken out, and that is automatics. Transmissions, clutches, or a combination of the two. Y’see, most motorbikes follow a set of agreed-upon (or mandated) rules for how they work - clutch lever and shifter on the left, five or six gears to select, neutral between first and second, done deal.

The world of automatics is anything but that. Sometimes neutral is all the way at the bottom. Sometimes there’s a parking gear at the bottom, and sometimes there’s a seventh gear at the top. Sometimes you use your fingers to shift and sometimes you use your foot - sometimes it’s neither, sometimes it’s both. Centrifugal clutches, electronic clutches, electronic shifters but also regular ones. It’s the Wild West, and we here at Common Tread found ourselves curious how they all compare.

Many riders got the two-wheel itch when they were too young to ride a motorcycle. Some have to wait longer than others to scratch that itch. Bob Berrettini waited longer than most and worked harder to achieve his dream.

When Berrettini was six years old, he suffered a stroke, a loss of blood flow to the area of his brain that sent signals to the motor control nerves on his right side. His right hand and foot were affected, and he was left with a limp. Today, he says, "The best I can do with my right hand is hold a baseball bat."

With motorcycles off the table, he turned to bicycles.
