A New England classic, built for what’s next

The new Hood 42 makes its debut at the Newport International Boat Show, pairing timeless New England design with the performance and versatility of Volvo Penta Aquamatic DPI.

Built by Lyman-Morse, designed by CW Hood Yachts, and powered by twin Volvo Penta D6-440 DPI engines, the Hood 42 combines 880hp with a cruising speed in the mid-30-knot range. The DPI propulsion package complements the boat’s open-transom design while delivering the responsive performance, maneuverability and intuitive control that make time on the water even more enjoyable.

It’s been a summer of very different launches at Lyman-Morse.

First came the new Hood 42 LM, a highly refined yacht built around craftsmanship, sophisticated systems and thoughtful design. Then came Firefly, a 49-foot fully electric, solar-powered passenger catamaran built for Upstream Alliance.

On the surface, the two vessels couldn’t be more different. But underneath, they have a lot in common. Both required our teams to push technology, engineering and craftsmanship forward -- to solve complex problems, integrate advanced systems and build something that hadn’t quite been done this way before. That ability to bring different disciplines together under one roof is a big part of what defines Lyman-Morse.

Firefly took that especially far, putting our team at the leading edge of electric propulsion, large-scale lithium-iron-phosphate battery integration and the evolving Coast Guard requirements surrounding these systems.

The newest yacht from Lyman-Morse looks to New England’s classic wooden boats while hiding plenty of modern engineering beneath the surface. The first Hood 42 LM pairs a sculpted profile and wood-clad cabin house with cold-molded composite construction that combines Douglas fir and Western red cedar with advanced laminates.

Modern touches are deliberately kept discreet, from a concealed electronics console and electronic windows to a carbon-fiber companionway door wrapped in varnished veneer. Twin 440 hp Volvo Pentas give the 42-footer a cruising speed in the mid-30-knot range.

The first Hood 42 LM will make its public debut at the Newport International Boat Show in September.

We’re proud to share the completed winter work our Thomaston team performed on Odalisque (ex Foftein Star), a 1989 Royal Huisman ketch.

Over the course of this project, our team touched nearly every system on board: hull and mast repairs, fairing, and fresh paint on her aluminum construction; complete mast disassembly and reassembly with all-new hardware, wiring, and a new rod rigging package; rebuilt hydraulics, furler motors, and stays; upgraded nav electronics including a new autopilot, AIS, and radar suite; and a Gen 3 Starlink installation. Below decks, the Gardner Marine main diesel received a full rebuild, as did the Hundested propulsion system and main generator.

The finishing details include new interior and exterior upholstery, color-adjustable spreader uplighting, and a beautifully restored helm wheel, hand-lettered in gold leaf with 14 coats of Epifanes gloss. A fully custom boarding platform from our Fabrication division finishes off the magnificent work.

Odalisque is a special vessel. It was a privilege to send her back out looking and performing like it.
