One of our most frequently asked questions as we near the end of boating season is: How do you stabilize the fuel in your outboard for storage?

Here is the answer in three simple steps:

Step 1: Fill the tank. Start with a full fuel tank before adding anything.

Step 2: Add the stabilizer. Add the recommended amount of fuel stabilizer directly to the tank.

Step 3: Run the engine. Run the engine for 5–10 minutes to circulate the stabilizer throughout the entire fuel system. Letting it sit in the tank without circulating it defeats the purpose.

Taking these simple steps before storing your outboard helps prevent corrosion and keeps your fuel system in good condition through the off-season, so you are ready to go come spring.

Oil Filters Are Just As Important As Oil

Changing the oil in your outboard is important, but changing the oil filter could make the difference in avoiding extensive repairs. The filter prevents dirty oil and debris from contaminating the motor and when neglected, this happens:

Increased Wear: Dirt and debris contaminate the oil, negatively affecting the lubricating properties, that lead to increased friction and damage to moving parts.
Overheating: Dirty oil filters can cause the motor to overheat by limiting oil flow.
Costly Repairs: A dirty filter sitting for too long affects proper circulation and leads to engine failure, which will cost significantly more than changing the filter.
