Most of you that know us, or do business here at Lair Diesel Repair, know that we enjoy educating our customers on things we know from experience to help our customers make the best decisions when it comes to their vehicles.
Recently we have had some experience dealing with Vehicle protections plans. You know, the ones that a dealer will add to the cost of the vehicle to give you "Peace of Mind" when it comes to vehicle repairs, which we all know can be costly. Especially when we're talking about diesels.
Please don't waste your money on these. They are nothing short of a scam. You can read all the fine print, and think you're smart enough, or maybe tough enough to know what you're buying, and to be able to get what is deserved out of these types of policies, but you won't get much of anything.
We recently had a customer buy a Duramax with a broken crankshaft from a dealer. He had purchased an extended warranty for an additional $5,000. The engine repair was going to cost nearly $20,000. Luckily, he had that insurance to cover an engine, right? Wrong. They said the policy had a maximum benefit of $6000. So they suggested we find a used engine. Ok we did that which as you can imagine the junkyard engine lead to numerous unforeseen problems that we took care of. In the end we managed to get the truck back up and running for around $15,000. So he paid the bill and the repair plan denied the claim completely.
The next customer had a policy that cost $4000.00. He had a wheel bearing go bad. After hours of jumping through hoops they offered to pay $200 under our cost for the part with no markup and half the labor on the bill at a reduced labor rate. The $900 job got a payout of $428 after a $100 deductible.
In either case keeping the money spent on the "Protection Plan" would have been more beneficial to the customer than having the plan. I didn't even calculate any interest on these policies, and knowing most people are adding this cost to the loan for the vehicle this cost is astronomical. These plans are a false sense of security and really should be labeled as FRAUD, and or Larceny/Theft by deception. Again, Please don't fall for these bogus repair insurance policies. There is no Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, or Repair Protection Plans. If you have already purchased one, I'm sorry and I don't blame you, I don't think less of you, you didn't know better. Now you do.
If you work for one of these companies, or sell these policies, shame on you.
