This is one we always look forward to seeing each year. This beautiful 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT is an absolute pleasure to drive and a great example of why these cars are so special. Between the wonderful sound of the twin-cam engine and the light and responsive handling, it’s a true drivers car.

After a great summer of driving, she’s back in the shop for her annual service and replacement of a leaking water pump before settling in for the off-season.

Nearly every vehicle that comes through our shop needs some kind of wiring work. Whether it’s a complete harness replacement or simply correcting old repairs, electrical systems seem to be one of the most commonly neglected areas on antique cars.

Some of you may recognize this 1938 Dodge truck. It was here this spring for a thorough mechanical recommissioning, and during that process we found that the wiring had reached the end of its useful life and really needed to be replaced.

We ordered a complete harness from one of our trusted suppliers, who builds each harness to order from the original patterns, using the proper colors, tracers, terminals, and cloth covering. Naturally, something made that way takes a little time.

The truck is now back in the shop so we can complete the harness replacement, and with the new wiring laid out next to the old, it’s pretty clear this work was long overdue!

Electrical systems may not be the most glamorous part of an old vehicle, but good wiring is a big part of making one safe, reliable, and enjoyable to drive.

Getting some tuning and test driving in on this Lancia Flaminia 3C before the Nor’Easter hits!

This car threw us a unique tuning issue that had us stumped for a minute, but with some old-school diagnostic equipment and methods, we were able to get to the bottom of it in short order.

We’ve got this classic Italian Grand Tourer running like it should now, and it’s a real pleasure to drive!

I’m sure some of you recognize this handsome 1931 Model A Roadster!

We completed a full restoration on this beauty around this time last year, and after a summer of coastal cruising, the owner brought her back for an oil change and thorough check-over before winter.

There are even a few bugs in the radiator, because the owner isn’t afraid to drive it! Just how we like to see them used.

We greased all the fittings, checked the freeze protection, tire pressures, fluid levels, and gave everything a careful once-over. She’s ready for winter hibernation!

This beautiful 1960 Jaguar XK150 went home today after an extended stay at the shop!

It was a very solid, well cared for car when it arrived, but like many classics that have been enjoyed over the years, it was ready for a little love. After giving the car a thorough inspection, we sat down with the owner, developed a game plan together, and got to work.

During its stay, we completely rebuilt the worn front suspension with new bushings, ball joints, and tie rods. The brake system received a comprehensive rebuild, including sleeved caliper bodies, all new seals and hoses, with the associated hardware replated in the correct clear cadmium finish. We also resealed the oil pan and oil filter mounting adapter, addressed a host of smaller electrical issues, installed a new auxiliary electric cooling fan, adjusted the valves, gave the engine a full tune-up, and performed a complete fluid service.

After plenty of sorting and road testing, she’s running and driving wonderfully and singing a glorious song through those twin tailpipes!

It’s hard to beat a classic Jaguar, and an XK150 in bright red certainly makes a strong case.

Today marks 4 years since Tom joined Mechanical Arts!

Tom is the longest-running employee at our still-young company, and it’s hard to imagine the shop without him. He’s one of our metalworking and fabrication specialists, but he wears plenty of other hats too. He’s exceptionally talented with automotive electrical and wiring work, and just about any project that requires patience, precision, and a high level of attention to detail.

With Tom, “good enough” is never good enough.

His background includes bodywork and paint, automotive electronics, years of machinery repair and fabrication at a local ski area, professional steel fabrication, and a metal shaping course through McPherson College’s Summer Institute.

Beyond his skills in the shop, Tom is also our resident class clown and a genuine animal lover, two qualities that have made him a pretty important part of the personality around here, too.

Tom has been a big part of Mechanical Arts’ growth over the past four years, and we’re extremely lucky to have his craftsmanship, dedication, sense of humor, and friendship on our team.

The owner of this Mustang has been telling me for years about the ’68 coupe he had in high school, and that if he ever found another one, he’d bring it to us to get it ready for the road. So when the opportunity came along to buy this incredibly solid 1967 Mustang Coupe, he jumped at it!

After sitting for nearly 25 years, the Mustang came to us for a thorough mechanical recommissioning. During its stay we performed a complete fluid service and tune-up, extensive electrical repairs, replaced the fuel tank and tires, rebuilt the brake system and converted it to a power-assisted setup with front disc brakes, installed a new Holley carburetor, and took care of countless other smaller items needed to make it a dependable driver again.

Now it’s back on the road and looking the part. With its slightly nose-down stance, Cragar wheels, and white-letter tires, it has a great ’70s street-machine look that suits the car perfectly.

It’s always satisfying to bring a car back after a long slumber — especially when it gives its owner a chance to revisit a little piece of his youth.

A nice variety of cars in the shop today, representing some of the best from different countries and eras!

Up front, the 1947 Mercury Station Wagon is getting wiring, suspension, brake, and general service work. In the middle, the 1960 Jaguar XK150 is undergoing a valve adjustment. Next to it, the 1928 Packard Great Race Speedster is in for some engine diagnostic work, while all the way in the back the 1962 Lancia Flaminia Touring 3C is getting ready for its first test drive.

Four very different automobiles, each with its own engineering, character, and needs — and exactly the kind of variety that keeps things interesting around here!

We have a particularly special visitor in the shop this week, a spectacular 1922 Kissel 6-45 “Gold Bug” Speedster!

This Kissel was one of the feature cars at the Owls Head Transportation Museum’s recent New England Auto Auction. The car recently emerged from a comprehensive restoration, but due to circumstances beyond the owner’s control, it had accumulated less than a mile of road use afterward.

Once the car arrived at Owls Head and began seeing some actual driving, an issue with the clutch revealed itself. Knowing it would need to be addressed following the auction, the Museum reached out and asked us to take care of it for the car’s new owner.

The Owls Head Transportation Museum has played an important role in my life and career for many years, and we’re always glad to continue that relationship by lending our expertise when needed.

Kissels are rare automobiles in any form, and the sporting Gold Bug is an especially significant example. Caring for historically important automobiles like this is exactly the kind of work we specialize in, and we’re glad to help see this one properly sorted and ready for its next chapter.
