What's better than a big brake kit on an early Thunderbird? Two Thunderbirds of course!

Oddly enough these two projects have been running side by side on the bench. It was neck and neck as to who was going to get completed first. And the winner is: our Customers!

Both 1962 Ford Thunderbirds. Both built on 13-in FNSL6 Caliper applications. The real kicker is that one of these had the original drum brakes on it. The other had a retrofit disc kit on it.

In the case of the drum spindle we rehabbed the stock hub and bearing. On the disc spindle we re-machined the disc to use as the hub. Both systems work well but the disc spindle clearly has a significant difference in wheel mount offset, I believe the hat is about 3/8" deeper on the disc spindle meaning a wider track width.

Another side benefit is that the customers can choose whether they wish to have this kit installed FS for front spindle or RS for rear spindle. Given the car is rear steer at this time there is enough room above the steering arm to go RS mount.

Audi TT track kit- let the fun begin!

13" directional rotors and six pot race calipers with Thermloc pistons and BP30 race pads. Get 'er done we will.

Built to allow our customer to consider 14-in diameter discs at a later date. I don't really feel that's going to be necessary but it's clearly on the table. The other kicker here is an extremely shallow offset. We had considered the much larger bodied Aerolite line of calipers but it was just not going to fit inside the wheel.

With a terminal speed of perhaps 120 mph I feel this is going to be quite ample for most of his use. The insulated pistons combined with the BP30 track pads should give him plenty of fade resistance and no overheating of brake fluid.

Top loading brake pads should allow for easy change out should he decide to run the car on the street or participate in autocross events.

Back to the big stuff today!

Custom Caprice front kit. But this one is fit to some custom fabricated 4-in lift spindles! That created quite the challenge since the standard mounting holes for all of our Caprice kits were not applicable.

This required modification to the fab parts and a rather unusual radial mount bracket. Because the calipers sit so low down in no man's land we had to produce a bracket rigid enough to support the free floating requirement. Pair that with some larger hardware to control any type of deflection.

So far the rest of it turned out just fine. *Please note when you have custom spindles you have to specify what size inner wheel bearing you require so we can match our hub assemblies to your spindle!! In this case sets 3 & 6-- which are not standard on early Caprice.
