Very early in my automotive career, I didn’t know much at all. My girlfriend at the time and I bought a little Ford EXP from the dealership I worked at. It was a cool little car, and she liked it, which was of course very important. We trusted what the salesman said and we bought the car. I didn’t know anything about negotiation, so we paid full sticker for the car.
Not long after, the timing belt broke. It cost us a tow bill, and her grandfather and I spent an afternoon and evening replacing the belt. It was quite a chore on that car, but we got it running. Looking back on it, with what I know now, things could have been different. Of course, hindsight is 20/20.
And it could have been worse. In attempting to start the car, the belt broke. Had we been driving, due to the engine being an interference motor, the damage would have been much more significant. We were lucky.
However, a little bit of knowledge and knowing the right questions to ask would have changed the game completely. We could have walked away from that particular car, and got into something a little better. Or, we could have had ammunition to negotiate a better deal.
