The engine cooling system does more than keep the temperature gauge under control. It also supplies heat to the vehicle’s cabin. When coolant becomes low or circulation is interrupted, the heater may behave inconsistently while engine temperature begins to rise.

In this case, the combination of an over-temperature warning and changing vent temperature suggested coolant loss or poor circulation. Continuing to drive under those conditions could have increased the risk of severe overheating and engine damage.
