What happens if you push a performance car to its limits for 62,000 miles straight?

That’s exactly what Auto Bild did with the BMW M3 G80 in its long running “Dauertest” reliability program.

Over two years, the car was driven hard, covering around 4,700 miles per month, including aggressive road use and track driving. After reaching 62,000 miles, the entire engine was stripped down and inspected in detail.

The results were surprising. Despite the heavy use, the engine showed almost no wear, with no leaks, cracks, or scoring in the cylinders. Even the clutch, after all that abuse, still had around 30,000 miles of life left.

According to Auto Bild, none of the nearly 200 cars they’ve tested over 30 years performed this flawlessly.

It’s a strong statement about the durability of BMW’s 3.0 liter twin turbo S58 engine, proving it can handle serious stress without compromising reliability.
