Before the winter rains really settle in, here's a 10-minute driveway job worth doing: check your tire tread depth.

Grab a penny and slide it into a groove, Lincoln's head down. If you can see all of his head, you're at the 2/32 legal limit and the tire's done. Use a quarter for an earlier warning at 4/32, where wet grip starts fading. And check the inner, center, and outer edges of each tire, because uneven wear points straight at a pressure or alignment problem worth fixing.

One hard hit can bulge a sidewall, bend an alloy rim, or knock your alignment out in a single second, no slow wear required. Watch for a crooked steering wheel, a new pull to one side, fresh vibrations, or clunks over bumps. Any of those after a jarring hit means something may have gotten knocked loose.

It's getting dark earlier, the roads are wet, and if your headlights look a little yellow and dim, this is the season it starts to matter.

Most fading comes down to three fixable things: cloudy oxidized lenses, aging bulbs, and headlights that have drifted out of aim. Lens restoration alone can bring back a surprising amount of light for a fraction of new-housing cost. And if your lights flicker or brighten when you rev, that's a wiring clue, not a bulb one.

Hydroplaning comes down to two things you actually control: your tire tread and your speed. Deep tread channels water away, worn tread rides up on top of it. Slowing down 5-10 mph in heavy rain gives your tires the contact they need. If your steering ever goes light, ease off the gas, keep the wheel steady, and let the tires reconnect with the road.
