I was an auto mechanic for nearly forty years and unfortunately hurt myself bad enough that my career ended as a technician, now I am in R.T.C college learning a new profession, I missed being a mechanic for a while but now I am looking forward to a new path. On most vehicles the timing belt is recommended at a certain mileage, whether it is at 60k, 90k or 105k miles, what a lot of automobile owners don't realize is it is similar to oil changes, you change the oil at 3,000 miles or three months which ever occurs first. This is the same for timing belts, I myself need the timing belt every 60,000 miles but don't drive very much so I need to replace timing belt every six years, the way I calculate it is for every 10,000 miles add a year just to be on the safe side, the timing belt is a critical component to any engine and like any rubber based product it loses strength and elasticity from age and also weather is a factor, extreme cold or hot weather has an effect, engines typically stop in the same spot when shut off after driving whether the engine is hot or cold, so the timing belt wears unevenly and starts to wear down in the areas where it goes around the pulleys, timing belt tensioner, water pump etcetera. There are several Japanese and domestic vehicles now which use direct fuel injection instead of individual injector for each cylinder. The reasons for this are, better reliability, better emissions control and fuel efficiency. The problem with direct ignition that manufacturers are trying to fix, and car owners are experiencing are severe carbon deposits on the cylinder head valves, the carbon build-up is caused by a few factors.
