Yesterday I had the honor of attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the National Memorial of Military Ascent, a remarkable tribute perched among the breathtaking bluffs of Grafton, Illinois.
The memorial stands as a powerful reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of the men and women who answered the call during World War II, including those whose bravery shaped the outcome of D-Day and changed the course of history.
What made the day especially meaningful for me was having the privilege to witness this project's journey from its earliest days as an idea, to a vision, to a carefully crafted plan, and now to a tangible reality that will inspire generations to come. Seeing a dream become something people can touch, experience, and learn from is truly extraordinary.
Congratulations to my friends, Mayor (Retired Colonel) Mike Morrow, whose vision, passion, persistence, and leadership helped bring this incredible memorial to life and John & Jayne Simmons, whose generosity propelled this dream into reality.
This new national landmark stands proudly overlooking the Mississippi River—a lasting testament to both the heroes it honors and the determination of those who ensured their stories would never be forgotten.
