NEW ARRIVAL: 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR Fastback
Offered here is an exceptionally original 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR “King of the Road” Fastback, a car that doesn’t just represent the height of the muscle car era—it helped define it. With just 14,652 documented original miles, this example stands among the most authentic and best-preserved survivors in existence, retaining the character, integrity, and presence that restorations can only attempt to replicate. Introduced mid-year in April 1968, the GT500KR was the ultimate expression of Shelby performance, a one-year, top-tier model that elevated power, exclusivity, and prestige at the peak of the American horsepower wars. At its heart is the legendary 428 Cobra Jet V8, a 7.0-liter powerhouse featuring high-compression design, improved airflow, and a Holley 4-barrel carburetor. While conservatively rated at 335 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque, these engines are widely known to produce well over 400 horsepower in reality, delivering blistering performance for the era, including 0–60 mph times around 6 seconds and quarter-mile runs in the 14-second range, firmly placing the KR among the fastest production cars of its time. The “KR,” or King of the Road, was more than a name—it was a statement. In a now-famous move, Carroll Shelby secured the KR designation ahead of Chevrolet, who had been developing a competing concept, further cementing Shelby’s legacy of outpacing the competition both on the road and in the marketplace.
What truly sets this example apart is its remarkable originality. This is a true unrestored survivor, retaining its original 428 Cobra Jet engine, factory-applied Highland Green Metallic paint, deluxe black interior with vinyl bucket seats, and even its factory smog equipment. The drivetrain components, factory tags, and overall presentation reflect a level of preservation that serious collectors recognize as the benchmark standard. The car exhibits an honest, well-preserved patina that only time can create, reinforcing its status as a reference-grade example. Beyond condition, its rarity further enhances its desirability—one of just 1,053 GT500KR Fastbacks produced, one of 520 finished in Highland Green, and one of an even smaller subset equipped with this exact combination of color, trim, and options. Built late in the production run on June 5, 1968, it represents one of the final examples of the KR fastback, adding an additional layer of significance...
