A Good Investment Doesn't Always Have Four Wheels

Every fall, FFA and 4-H season starts rolling again around here, and we're glad to be a small part of that.

Ryan has been supporting these organizations for years, not because it shows up on a billboard somewhere, but because these kids are going to be the farmers, the mechanics, the neighbors, and the business owners of the next generation. Helping them get a decent start seems like the least we can do.

Stuart and the surrounding communities have been good to Gus Auto for a long time now. Sponsoring a few jackets or a project along the way is just our way of returning the favor.

If your family is involved in FFA or 4-H this fall, good luck to your kids. We mean that. 🤝

Your brakes worked hard this summer. Here's what to watch for before winter shows up

Summer is tough on brakes. Stop-and-go around town, gravel roads, hauling a trailer or a load of kids to activities. All of it puts real wear on your brake pads, and by the time fall arrives, some of those pads are closer to done than you'd expect.

A few things worth paying attention to: squealing when you first brake in the morning, a grinding noise that doesn't go away, the pedal feeling a little softer than it used to, or the truck pulling slightly to one side when you stop. None of those are things to wait on once Iowa decides to remind you what winter feels like.

We're happy to take a look. Most of the time when a vehicle comes in for something else, we can check brake condition right there on the hoist. If something needs attention, we'll show you.

Give us a call at Gus Auto. 515-523-2222.

You've got your kid's backpack packed, their lunch money counted, and their schedule set for the first day. But what about the car they're driving? Ryan's been watching Stuart kids grow up, from little league to high school prom, and this time of year, he wants to make sure the vehicle they're driving away in is actually ready for the road. Whether it's a used car, a family sedan, or a first-time driver’s ride, it’s worth a quick checkup before they hit the highway. A few simple things like brake pads, fluids, and tire pressure can make all the difference. Let’s make sure they’re safe, and that you’re not stressing about their ride. Come by, we’ll take a look, no pressure, just a little care.

You've got that Iowa summer smell in the air, and it's not just the cornfields. Ethanol blends are great for the environment, but after a season of short trips, idling in the heat, and kicking up gravel dust, your fuel system can start to collect deposits. These little guys might seem harmless, but they can really mess with your engine's performance and fuel efficiency.

A fuel induction cleaning is like a tune-up for your tank. It clears out the gunk and helps your engine run smoother, start easier, and get better gas mileage. It's one of those services that tends to pay for itself pretty quickly. And let me tell you, after a long summer of driving, your vehicle will thank you.

Come on back and look at this, it's worth it.

Three owners. One building. Nearly 30 years.

This shop has been fixing Stuart's vehicles since the late 90s, and Ryan grew up inside it. He came in as a kid with his dad, went full time right out of high school, and spent more than 20 years learning the trade before buying the place in 2018.

Same bays. Same phone number. A lot of the same customers.

That history matters when you drop off your keys. You're not explaining your vehicle to a stranger. Odds are good we've worked on it before, maybe for years.

Been a while since your last visit? Call (515) 523-2624 and let's get you on the schedule.

Back-to-school season is a natural gut-check moment, if your kid is driving a 2018 or newer vehicle to school or college, the service intervals on those engines are not suggestions, and skipping them is where the expensive repairs come from. Newer cars are built with more tech, more sensors, and more complexity than ever before. The owner’s manual isn’t just a list of things to do, it’s a roadmap to keep your car running safely and efficiently. Those scheduled maintenance intervals? They’re not just about keeping up with the clock, they’re about catching small issues before they turn into big problems. Oil changes, fluid checks, and system cleanings are all part of that plan. And let me tell you, when you skip a service, you're not just saving a few bucks, you're setting yourself up for a much bigger repair down the road. So, take a moment, check the manual, and make sure your ride’s ready for the road ahead.

You know that feeling when you get a quote from a dealer and your heart sinks? "Well, that wasn't as bad as I expected."

A customer came in with a big estimate for some engine work, all set to pay the full price. We looked at the car, gave it a good listen, and explained what actually needed doing now versus what could wait. Turns out, the real issue was simpler than they thought. We fixed it without needing to replace the whole thing. The final number surprised everyone in a good way.

That's the value of knowing your mechanic, someone who looks at the whole picture, not just the big numbers. Come on back and look at this.

You know your brake pads wear down, but did you know brake fluid can absorb moisture over time? It's one of those things that doesn't make noise until it's too late, like when you're trying to stop on a slick fall road. Brake fluid isn't just a lubricant; it's a critical part of your braking system. As it sits, it can soak up moisture from the air, which lowers its boiling point. That means when you hit the brakes hard, the fluid can boil, creating air bubbles that reduce braking power. It's not just about stopping, it's about staying safe. Before the weather turns, let's check your brake fluid. It's part of regular maintenance that can save you from a scary situation. Come on back and look at this, we'll show you what's going on.

August means county fair projects are winding down and fall is just around the corner, which means it's time to reflect on the kids who make this community worth showing up for. As someone who grew up right here in Stuart, I've always believed in giving back. That's why we've been proud to sponsor 4-H and FFA kids for years, not just because they're doing amazing things, but because they're part of the same tight-knit community that raised me.

These kids are the heart of what makes this place special. They're learning, growing, and contributing in ways that shape the future. And honestly? It's a joy to see them step into the spotlight at the fair, knowing they've got a little support from someone who cares. We're not just sponsoring projects, we're investing in the next generation of leaders. That’s what it means to be part of a community that looks out for its own.
