This right here is exactly why shops will take a car down to metal. The thickness of filler or the car has too many paint jobs on it. That will all contribute to major paint failure and I’ve seen it many times.

We’ve known that the factory isn’t perfect. Anyone that’s worked at a dealer know this first hand. The shop will do a better job for you than factory will ever do. The factory puts enough materials on the car to get it to leave. So maybe 1.5 coats of clear but probably more like 1 coats.

This is what we as repair facilities are dealing with insurance companies. As repairers we have the knowledge and training that we go through to repair your vehicle correctly and within the guidelines of the manufacturer. I can tell you that two of my former working partners one company begins with an A and the other one an F both use AI to scrub estimates and beat up their repair facilities they’re partnered with to do a more cost effective repair. Base coat reductions are concession DRP shops will make to appease the company. The shops are taking a loss on materials and labor but still giving the customer a quality repair and lifetime warranty. Just be patient with your shop of choice even the ones out of network because they’re ultimately working to correct this behavior with insurance companies.
