Your car is one of the most expensive possessions you have. In order to make the most of your investment, you want give it the care and attention it deserves. Proper care and maintenance will not only extend the life of your vehicle, it will also ensure that your car runs safely and efficiently. However, carrying out the wrong kind of maintenance can do the most damage to your vehicle.

Here are 3 common maintenance mistakes most car owners make. Avoid falling prey to these mistakes as they can end up costing you.

Neglecting fluid checks

Oil isn’t the only fluid that needs to be checked and replaced. There are other fluids that are essential to keeping your car running well. Besides the oil, be sure to check the coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and power steering fluid.

Putting off repairs

One survey revealed that 40% of consumers postpone maintenance or repair on their vehicles. Often, people find it hard to spend money and have their car fixed if it’s still running or if it’s slightly malfunctioning. However, putting off repairs can cost more later on.

Ignoring the check engine light is a good example of putting off repairs. The car seems to be functioning normally, so car owners decide not to make a big deal out of it. Then, things come up and they totally forget about it, until one day the car breaks down.

Take your car to a mechanic and have the problem fixed as soon as possible. Don’t wait for it to turn into a bigger, more complicated issue. In some cases, one problem can lead to another. When this happens, the problem becomes more costly to fix, so you end up spending more money down the road.

Not checking your tires

It is important to check your tires before driving off. Why? It’s because the tire pressure is affected by the weather. In fact, tire pressure will change by about 2% for every 10°F change in temperature.

Underinflated or overinflated tires will have a direct effect on your tire’s durability and car’s fuel efficiency. It also makes your care more difficult to control; thus, creating some safety issues. Tire rotation should also be done to make them last longer.
