I’ve figured out that nobody will fight me if I price my services at $0. In fact, they’ll clap and cheer. They’ll say, “you’re so generous” or “you’re so affordable”.

But that’s not validation. That’s just something that happens when something is cheap enough for everyone, because when it’s cheap there’s no resistance, no standards, no real decision making, so there’s no thinking required. It’s the easiest “Yes” in the world.

Here’s the problem though. If the only way people say yes to my services is when the price is at rock bottom, that shows I only care about my services being accessible and not valuable. Cheap always sells but that doesn’t make it valuable, only accessible.

I would rather my clients think about transformation, results and return on investment. I don’t want the price sensitive person because they will always leave, even if I’m great, over deliver or even charge a little less than I should because to them they’ll leave if they find someone $300 cheaper.

So, I’ve learned I’m not too expensive. My services just aren’t available to people who were never serious in the first place. Price creates pressure and pressure filters out the non serious people. I don’t exist to be cheap. I exist to create change and true change costs something.

I chose to live this principle out this morning. I had a gentleman stop in needing one headlight cleaned up to make it clear and shiny bc he recently replaced the headlight on the other side from an insurance claim.

I took a Quick Look at the headlight and did notice some lens oxidation so we moved forward. When I was almost finished with the process, I noticed that the internal chrome of the headlight was a Smokey color and not the bright chrome color of the new headlight. I then realized that while what I had done did improve the headlight overall, the real fix is replacing either that headlight or the new one previously installed and that the main issue was not just a hazy headlight. Basically, they were two different styles.

I brought the client inside and explained this to him. He agreed with my opinion. I then told him there was no charge for my work. He wanted to pay me but I refused. I don’t say that for a pat on the back but rather to lean on the principle of just being kind. Did I do valuable work? Yes. Did I deserve to be paid? Yes. But my choice was to forgo that bc to me, in that moment, it was the right thing to do. It was in the best interest of my client and honestly, it felt good to refuse payment in this instance. I hope he gets his headlights corrected and that he left our experience with a good feeling. Be kind.

Thankful for these two projects. The Tacoma is getting all the glass polished and ceramic coated. The Hyundai is having a pretty gnarly scratch on the trunk area addressed.

It’s not always a big full polish and ceramic coating job but these are no less important and a reality of daily drivers.

Don’t hear me wrong, I genuinely enjoy what I do for a living. I love helping folks get their vehicles in great shape and protected.

But…it’s not my life nor my identity. I do this so I can do other things. Things that build relationships and memories with the people I care about. I’m 50 years old people. I’ve learned a lot and I still am. One of the things I’ve learned is that the coffee gets cold so go do the things you want to before it does. Whether that’s getting your car polished and ceramic coated or watching your kid do their thing at a game, or playing golf with your buddies too much. Just go do it because you’ll die one day and the world will keep spinning. None of this truly matters in the end.

😔 This is an unfortunate part of the business. Cancelations and reschedules. Will they actually reachedule? Will they show back up? Will I never hear from them again? Who knows, but either way, you gotta keep on trucking along.

I guess it’s true in most any profession. Check out this pressure washing job for someone’s home. There’s always a guy that will do it cheaper and there’s always a customer who will take him up on it…guess what?
