Crazy from the heat! We all know that the St. Louis summer heat is rough on your car. Heat can stress your AC, tires, engine, brakes, and more, causing them to overheat, break down rapidly, and fail. But there’s one heat-related auto issue you may have never considered– wheel or hub bearings overheating and failure. While wheel or hub bearings can fail at any time, the heat can definitely be a major contributing factor.
Just last week at Cyclone Car Care, we diagnosed and fixed no less than six cars from Affton to Webster Groves, with this very problem!
While heat is not the only thing that can damage your wheel bearings, it’s definitely a factor when temperatures hit 90 or above. And, the heat from the roads and driving, especially at highway speeds, may hasten their failure. Other factors, such as towing excessive loads (trailers), road-impact damage (potholes), worn brake calipers, and wear and tear (100,000 miles+), can also lead to wheel bearing failure.
How do you know if your wheel or hub bearings are beginning to fail or have failed?
You might hear a grinding, growling, or rubbing noise coming from your wheels.
You might smell burning grease.
The steering might feel loose or off.
Can you keep driving on failing wheel or hub bearings?
DON’T chance it. Severely overheated or noisy bearings risk damaging the hub, spindle, brakes, axle components, and tire, and, in the worst case, can lead to wheel separation.
