🔥 “MECHANIC SHOPS ARE ROBBING PEOPLE!” 🔥

We’ve been seeing A LOT of posts lately…

“Shops charge too much.”
“When did labor get THAT expensive?!”
“$___ just to diagnose it?!”
“Mechanics are ripping people off!”

So let’s talk about it. 👀

WHEN DID EVERYTHING GO UP?!

When did trucks start costing $70,000–$100,000+?

When did a basic pickup come with 30+ computers, cameras, radar, emissions systems, electronic steering, electronic transmissions and enough wiring to run a small house? 😂

When did a decent scan tool start costing THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS — plus subscriptions every year?

When did a technician’s toolbox start costing as much as some people’s cars?

When did insurance go up?

Rent?

Electricity?

Parts?

Oil?

Shop supplies?

Software?

Training?

Payroll?

Taxes?

EVERYTHING WENT UP.

But somehow people expect the person responsible for diagnosing and repairing their $80,000 vehicle to still charge what shops charged 15–20 years ago.

Here’s what people don’t see when they get a repair bill:

🔧 Thousands upon thousands of dollars in technician tools
💻 Diagnostic equipment and software subscriptions
🏢 A building big enough and equipped to safely repair your vehicle
⚡ Electricity, insurance, lifts, compressors and equipment
📚 Constant training because vehicles change EVERY YEAR
👨‍🔧 Skilled technicians who have spent YEARS learning this trade
📋 Service advisors, office staff and support employees
🛡️ Insurance and warranties standing behind the work
💰 Payroll, payroll taxes and benefits
🧰 Specialty tools that might get used twice a year but are REQUIRED when your vehicle needs them

And DIAGNOSIS?

Diagnosis is not “plugging a computer into it.”

The scanner doesn’t pop up and say:

“Replace this $42 part and the truck is fixed.” 😂

It gives us DATA.

A skilled technician has to understand that data, test the system, read wiring diagrams, check powers and grounds, test circuits, verify mechanical operation and determine WHY it failed.

You’re not paying someone for the 30 minutes it took to find the problem.

You’re paying for the YEARS it took them to learn how to find it in 30 minutes.

Are there bad shops out there? Absolutely.

There are bad contractors.
Bad doctors.
Bad restaurants.
Bad dealerships.
Bad businesses in EVERY industry.

But stop lumping every independent repair shop and technician into the category of “crooks” simply because vehicle repairs aren’t cheap anymore.

Most good shops aren’t getting rich off one repair bill.

We’re trying to pay good technicians what they’re worth, buy the equipment necessary to work on modern vehicles, keep the lights on, stand behind our repairs and still be here the next time you need us.

And here’s the biggest thing:

You don’t want the CHEAPEST person in town working on one of the most expensive things you own.

You want somebody who knows what they’re doing.

At Texas Diesel & Auto, we’re not trying to be the cheapest shop in town.

We’re trying to be the shop that fixes it RIGHT.

Because cheap repairs get really expensive when you have to pay for them twice. 🔥🔧🇺🇸

🚨 EVERYBODY WANTS THEIR KID TO GO TO COLLEGE…

But then everybody complains when there’s nobody left to:

🔧 Fix their car
❄️ Fix their A/C
🚽 Plumb their house
⚡ Fix their electrical
🏗️ Build their homes
🚜 Repair their equipment

Did we do this to ourselves?

For years, we told kids the only way to be successful was to go to college.

“Don’t be a mechanic.”
“Don’t work construction.”
“Get a degree so you don’t have to work with your hands.”

Now skilled trades are hurting for GOOD people — and everybody is shocked that skilled labor costs money.

I hear it all the time:

“Why does it cost so much to fix my vehicle?”

Because the days of fixing everything with a $50 toolbox and a timing light are LONG GONE.

Today’s vehicles can have dozens of computers, miles of wiring, advanced emissions systems, high-pressure fuel systems, cameras, radar, sensors, modules and software.

A professional technician may have $50,000–$100,000+ invested in tools and equipment just to do their job.

Then the shop has lifts, alignment equipment, scan tools, diagnostic subscriptions, insurance, utilities, training, payroll, workers’ comp, taxes, parts, warranties and a building to keep the doors open.

And above all else…

YOU’RE PAYING FOR KNOWLEDGE.

You’re not just paying someone to turn a wrench for an hour.

You’re paying for the YEARS it took them to know which wrench to turn, what to test, and WHY.

So yes — maintaining and repairing vehicles is expensive.

But skilled tradespeople aren’t the problem.

We spent decades telling an entire generation that working with their hands wasn’t a successful career…

…and now we’re wondering where all the skilled workers went.

Maybe instead of asking:

“Why are mechanics so expensive?”

We should start asking:

“Why did we stop encouraging kids to become mechanics?” 🤔

There is NOTHING wrong with being a mechanic, plumber, electrician, HVAC technician, welder or equipment operator.

These careers can provide an incredible living — and this country literally DOES NOT FUNCTION WITHOUT THEM. 🇺🇸

At Texas Diesel & Auto, we’re proud of this trade. We’re proud of our technicians. And we’re proud to invest in the equipment, training and people it takes to repair vehicles correctly.

🔥 SKILLED LABOR ISN’T CHEAP.
CHEAP LABOR ISN’T SKILLED.

What do y’all think?

Did we push college so hard that we created the skilled-trade shortage ourselves? 👇👇👇

Customers say auto repair is too expensive... but nobody blinks at a $200 an hour plumber or a $400 vet visit. Why is the guy keeping your family safe at 70mph the one who's "ripping you off"?
