If a shop knows A/M parts are inferior to OEM why would they use them in repairs?

Bottom line is this....

OEM I make between 20-35% profit depending on manufacture.

A/M I make between 50-100% profit.

I spend roughly 1 million dollars on parts every year. It costs me no less than 150k a year to put OEM parts on your car.

That's a decision we easily make every day. Your safety means more to me then extra profit does. Make sure when you choose a repair facility that feels the same way.

P.S If they tell you we can't match it for the price insurance is willing to pay. It's because they are choosing profits over your safety. We do it daily on over 95% of our claims.

Have you ever received a safety recall notice in the mail or by email. When an OEM part has a safety recall manufacturer will send these out to notify you something needs to be done that could possibly be a safety hazard. If you haven't got it done when you check in for service work a lot of the times, they perform these while it's in for routine work. Regardless OEM has a process to inform you when a part could have failures that put you at risk. It's not often but it does happen.

So, let's say you had your car repaired at a Collision facility and they used CAPA certified parts your insurance company told you was just as good as OEM. What does that process look like when one has failed or is no longer certified?

Most collision shops and insurance companies don't even know what the process is. Why is that you ask? To be honest it's quite easy to miss. You used to have to sign up on CAPA website for monthly decertify reports which no one ever tells you about. Those would come by email, it will tell you year, manufacturer type, lot or batch number and what A/M part company it was. Rarely does it specify why it's been decertified. The only way I could know if it's a part, I have used is to pull the invoice from that car and check lot or batch number.

Let's ask a real question... Even if I get these reports what's the odds of me digging through every file checking to make sure the lot numbers matched to get your part swapped out. I'm going to tell you 100% that isn't happening. It's possible you could be riding around with a safety component ready to fail and you have no idea.

When choosing a collision repair facility ask them what type of parts they use. Are they going to put inferior parts on your car and try to sell them as the same quality? Or would they fight for you as a consumer to put OEM back on your car and make you whole again.

*As a special note... When a popular Collision podcast broadcasted how to get these decertified reports publicly Capa had it removed and no longer sends them by email...*

Progressive spent 3.49Billion dollars in advertisement in 2024.

Let's break down a few things that happened on Progressive claims last year alone.

Progressive took total loss fee's out of a customer's settlement without telling them. Because the standard fees they had been paying since I have been open were now above industry standard. They sent a tow truck driver without the correct payment to pick up a total loss 2 days in a row. The additional storage the vehicle accumulated was deducted from that settlement, also without telling the customer. Just sent them a check.

Now they locate parts from all over the country. If they find a door for 250 bucks in Texas that's all they want to pay. Even if you can't purchase that door. According to them "that's all they owe."

Spend two weeks handling the initial estimate and supplement. You run out of rental because they took way too long. Guess who's not going to pay for the additional days you need your rental car for.

OEM procedures on how your supposed to fix a vehicle... Progressive only sees them as suggestions but "not required". Progressive, the company that owes you money, has the right to determine how much they owe you. I have read it in the policy language for myself. That means they get to decide... not you or the repair professionals.

The fact of the matter is they don't mind spending 9 million dollars a day in advertisements. They would rather do that, then do right by you as a customer.

Be careful of who you choose your insurance with. I know money is tight and that seems appealing, but in the event of a loss it could cost you money out of pocket to get your car repaired.

It's once again our favorite time of year. Report Card time for Insurance Companies. How does yours rank?

The consistent theme is this... Insurance Companies that spend a ton of money in advertisement take your money and invest into things that don't align with playing your claim or making restitution. Those companies only care about one thing, acquiring more people to take money from.

Another big MSO (multi shop organization) eats another MSO.

Most people at a glance see these big MSO's and think they are all over the place they must do a really good job. MSO's are nothing more than investment firms that pour money into the industry to gooble up as many shops as they can. They build, invest and buy up in hopes of selling later down the road.

Well they must be great at what they do, otherwise they wouldn't be able to set up quickly and add so many shops. The truth is they sign major deals with Insurance Companies so they are constantly flooded with contracted work. Those contracts are called DRP's. There is not a single DRP contract out there that benefits a body shop completely. We have conceded on something to earn that contract. Maybe its only raising our rates at certain times, or not charging storage in a total loss claim. We have agreed to something in order to make that deal beneficial to both parties.

They help us by faster claim processing and recommending claims to the shop and we get more work. Currently we have only 2 DRP's at our shop. I could have quite a bit more if I wanted, but most DRP's cost you the customer. These shops help sell cheap repairs to your car and don't keep you informed of what they are doing. They tell you cheap imitation parts are just as good as OEM. They repair structures of cars that should be replaced. They take shortcuts that quite frankly could get you killed in the event of a second impact. Insurance companies steer work into those shops by making these kinds of threats. "We don't have an agreement with them so it may cost you money out of pocket if we don't agree with the repair." They want you to take it to that DRP because if they decline the repair good chance the shop will just do what they said and not even notify you.

If your insurance company has ever pressured you into a shop and you think something is off the repair, bring it by our shop. I will be happy to take a look at it without cost to you. We have served Robertson County for over 13 years and we want to continue to serve you. If we can help in anyway don't hesitate to reach out and let us know.

One of the most important parts of a repair is using OEM parts.

The overwhelming majority of Insurance companies want collision repair shops to use A/M parts on your vehicle for the repairs. You will hear things like this is a certified part by a 3rd party company. They are just as good as the OEM. Or the only reason the OEM only endorses its parts is so they can sell more.

Every month I subscribe to a newsletter that CAPA sends out. This is a list of its substandard parts that have been determined not to meet its lower than OEM standards. So after these parts have already been put on your vehicle after enough returns or complaints they will decertify the part. So what happens if a collision shop has used these parts on your vehicle. Technically they are supposed to notify you and the Insurance Company and redo the repair. If you notice only a part number is listed. It's unreasonable to think a collision shop can or would do this. Instead you the consumer have had your vehicle repaired with a substandard part. A part that quite possibly could put your family in danger during the event of a second collision.

Why would your insurance company do this. Well if you look at the board of directors for Capa. Most work for insurance companies. It's so they can save money at the risk of your safety.

I have people pretty often ask me which insurance companies are the best. Which ones handle claims quickly, or agree to pay what's required to repair the car correctly. I will note Tennessee Farm Bureau is missing from what I seen but most of the Farm Bureaus are pretty well in line with each other so you can get a idea of where they fall. In my opinion from this area they are easily one of the best to have.

The lower scoring companies have a variety of issues from difficulties settling the claim. Leaving claims short paid. Not wanting to pay for proper repairs etc. If you notice most of the companies at the bottom have massive budgets they spend in advertising. These companies would rather spend your premiums acquiring new customers rather than paying to have your vehicle properly repaired.

With the vehicles becoming more complex its more important than ever to have a good company to be insured with.
