EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Milta Sostre
Nominated by Diana Guzman, VP of Human Resources

“A truly good person will speak truth, act with truth, and stand for Truth. A truly good person is not afraid to think from their heart...” ― Suzy Kassem

Emotionally intelligent with a great spirit and kind heart, Milta Sostre puts the “human” in Human Resources. The YWCA’s HR Generalist, Milta joined the team in February of 2025.

“Milta is someone that works incredibly hard and puts her heart into everything that she does,” said Diana Guzman, Vice President of Human Resources. “She always treats people with dignity, compassion and kindness, never with bias or judgement.”

As HR Generalist, Milta’s responsibilities include preparing new hire packets and onboarding, conducting orientations, and processing timecards. “I also assist Diana with any workplace investigations and help ensure all HR audits are up to date,” added Milta.

Additionally, Milta is the YWCA’s resident foodie and sets the tone for the staff’s collective lunch hauls. As multifaceted as it gets and unassuming, Milta is also a movie buff with a specialty in horror. Added Diana, “Milta has a great sense of humor, she is easy to work with and can always match my energy.”

A dedicated wife, and mother to her beloved son, Josiah, Milta was born and raised in Springfield; the middle child of six kids. Fittingly, her birthday falls on Christmas Day. “I grew up in a big family, and my dad would always throw huge parties for me with all my family over,” she said. “We didn’t grow up with much, but my parents always made sure we had what we needed. They instilled a good work ethic in us and taught my siblings and I that a good education is what would get us by.”

An alumna of American International College (AIC), Milta received a bachelor’s in business administration, and subsequently a master’s through AIC’s fast-track MBA program in 2018.

Outside of the YWCA, Milta’s commitment to her community is exhibited through her work as a youth and associate pastor at Pentecostal Church of God, CLA in Springfield. Having grown up in that very church, Milta has been a youth pastor alongside her husband for 4 years. “It truly has been a huge blessing for us to help build and encourage leaders who love God,” she said.

“Milta has a strong sense of ethics and always strives to do the right thing,” said Diana. “Milta embodies the YWCA’s mission; she always thinks about others and considers what someone may be going through that could explain how they behave. Being trauma-informed is in her nature, which makes her the ideal person to have in HR.”

Prior to working at the YWCA, Milta worked at Baystate Medical Center for 11 years—first as a patient service representative and then in Human Resources. Already in need of a change and contemplating her future, Milta was laid off due to budget cuts and during her job search discovered the YWCA. “It has been a blessing working here. Not only because of what we do, but because I get to work with great people who truly make a difference in this world,” she said.

Before her interview, Milta researched the YWCA and looked up the organization’s leaders. As fate would have it, she remembered Diana from high school. “I remembered she had and still has a heart of gold,” said Milta. “When I got to the parking lot, I prayed this was the place for me. I am grateful for all I get to do and for meeting such amazing people.”

“The world could use a few more Milta’s in it,” said Diana. “I love working with her. She’s incredibly smart and keeps me grounded. I have complete trust in her.”

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Maria Ortiz
Nominated by Brandi Otero, Child and Family Clinician

"You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.” - Bob Marley

Kindness personified, Maria Ortiz, a Child and Family Clinician, is compassionate, dedicated, and cares deeply for the children she serves in the Children Who Witness Violence (CWWV) program.

“Maria’s passion and drive to help children and families is unmatched,” said Brandi Otero, a Child and Family Clinician for CWWV. “She is always willing to go the extra mile for her clients.”

Maria’s tenure at the YWCA began in February 2018. As a clinician, she provides short-term therapeutic services (approximately 12-15 sessions) for children ages 3 to 18 years old, who have been exposed to domestic violence, sexual assault and other types of traumas. Sessions are free and designed to meet the child’s comfort level. They can be held in-person at the YWCA, the child's school, or virtually from the child's home.

“The treatment can consist of individual child therapy, parenting sessions, and family sessions depending on the needs of the child,” said Maria. Additionally, Maria, who is bilingual, co-facilitates group counseling at John J. Duggan Academy with fellow CWWV clinicians.

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Maria moved to Massachusetts in 2009. She has worked in a myriad of clinical positions at nonprofits, serving adults and children in the Hispanic community, throughout Springfield and Holyoke.

“When I started at the agency as an intern, Maria was the first person to greet me and invite me into her sessions,” said Brandi. “She makes herself available to support the team in clinical advice and guidance; she contributes to staff education by holding presentations and offers wise insight on working with children and families who have experienced trauma.”

A pillar of strength for those she serves, Maria faced her biggest challenge when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2025. Despite this diagnosis, Maria’s unwavering determination and commitment propelled her to continue working and prioritizing the children who need her.

“It is a privilege and an honor to help children heal from such traumatic events like witnessing domestic violence and enduring other kinds of abuse,” said Maria.

With the loving support of her family and the joy of being a bonus mom to an adorable pup named Stella, Maria continued to work and see clients while balancing a battery of tests and doctor’s appointments. Ultimately, Maria had the fortitude to work up until the start of her radiation treatments, carrying herself with utter grace and a kind smile.

Maria, whose peers welcomed her back to work with much fanfare in March, barely missed a beat upon her return. Resiliently coming back, as she left, ready to serve the children in her community. Added Maria, “Also, my breast cancer is in remission!! YAY!!”

“Maria continues to be an inspiring, encouraging, and welcoming colleague who I appreciate very much,” added Brandi. “She is always happy to celebrate even the small accomplishments of our team on a professional and personal level.”

“I really love working here and am very grateful to be part of this fierce team at the YWCA and CWWV,” concluded Maria. “The YWCA's mission aligns with my life’s mission ‘dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.’”

🏒💜 The power of community was on full display Tuesday night as the Springfield Thunderbirds, in partnership with the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office, proudly presented a $5,000 donation to the YWCA of Western Massachusetts ahead of the T-Birds’ playoff game.

The donation marked the culmination of Domestic Violence Awareness Night held on April 4 at the Thunderdome, where proceeds were raised through an online auction of specialty warmup jerseys worn by the Thunderbirds.

“The work the YWCA does across our region is truly life-changing, and we were grateful to partner with the Thunderbirds to turn a night of hockey into something much bigger,” Sheriff Nick Cocchi said. “Thanks to the generosity of our community, this effort will help provide hope, safety, and support to survivors and families throughout Western Massachusetts.”

A huge thank you to everyone who supported this incredible cause and helped make a meaningful impact in our community. 💜
