🎣 Funny Friday at BJ’s Marine Service 🚤😂

Customer: “It ran great when I parked it last year!”

Us: “That was 11 months, 3 hurricanes, and 14 rainstorms ago... but let's take a look. 😆”

Every week we hear:
✅ "It was running fine yesterday."
✅ "I only hit the sandbar a little bit."
✅ "The battery was brand new... in 2016."
✅ "I think it's getting fuel." (Famous last words.)

Boats have a funny way of developing problems while sitting still. Fuel goes bad, batteries die, critters move in, and electrical gremlins start their own family reunions under the cowling. 🤣

⚙️ Technical Thursday – Signs Your Outboard May Be Overheating ⚙️

Most boaters know to watch the tell-tale stream, but that's not the only sign your outboard may be running too hot.

🚨 Common Signs of an Overheating Outboard:

✅ Overheat alarm sounding or warning light illuminated
✅ Engine going into "guardian" or reduced-power mode
✅ Loss of power or poor performance at higher RPMs
✅ Excessive steam coming from the exhaust or around the powerhead
✅ Hot or burning smell coming from the engine
✅ Engine shutting down unexpectedly
✅ Cylinder head or engine block too hot to touch briefly

What causes overheating?
🔹 Worn or damaged water pump impeller
🔹 Clogged water intake screens
🔹 Sand, mud, shells, or debris blocking cooling passages
🔹 Thermostat stuck closed
🔹 Internal corrosion restricting water flow
🔹 Running too shallow and sucking up debris

💡 Pro Tip: An outboard can still have a tell-tale stream and be overheating. The tell-tale only shows that some water is flowing—it doesn't guarantee the entire cooling system is working properly. That's why it's important to pay attention to alarms, performance changes, and other warning signs.

Ignoring an overheating issue can lead to warped cylinder heads, damaged pistons, blown head gaskets, and very expensive repairs.

If your outboard is showing any of these symptoms, don't wait until you're stranded on the water.

Back in the day, diagnosing an outboard over the phone was easy…

👨‍🔧 “Does it have spark?”
👨‍🔧 “Is fuel getting to it?”
👨‍🔧 “Pull it again and see what happens.”

Nowadays? These newer motors have:
✅ Computers
✅ Sensors
✅ Modules
✅ Warning systems
✅ Electronic fuel injection
✅ Technology smarter than some people we know 😎

That’s why it’s getting harder and harder to diagnose problems over the phone.

Two motors can have the SAME symptom but need two completely different repairs.

⚠️ Beeping alarm?
⚠️ Losing power?
⚠️ Won’t go over certain RPMs?
⚠️ Random shut downs?

It could be anything from a sensor issue to fuel delivery to electrical problems.

Sometimes the best answer is: 👉 “Bring it by so we can properly diagnose it.”

🚤🔧 TIP TUESDAY 🔧🚤

Choosing the RIGHT propeller for your boat and outboard can make a HUGE difference in performance, fuel economy, and overall ride quality.

A prop isn’t just a “one size fits all” part! 👀

Here are a few quick tips when selecting the right prop for your setup:

✅ Think about how you use your boat:
Fishing boats may need better low-end power for quick takeoff. Ski/tow boats benefit from faster acceleration. Cruising boats may want better top-end sp*ed and fuel efficiency

✅ Pitch matters
Lower pitch = quicker hole shot & pulling power, Higher pitch = more top sp*ed (if your motor can handle it)

✅ Diameter makes a difference The right diameter helps your motor push the boat efficiently without overworking the engine.

✅ Watch your RPMs Your outboard should run within the manufacturer’s recommended WOT (wide open throttle) RPM range. Too high or too low can hurt performance and engine life.

✅ Damaged props cost you money Bent blades, dings, or vibration can reduce fuel economy and even damage your lower unit over time.

Grease your trailer hubs before they become an expensive roadside adventure. 😬

A lot of boat owners focus only on the motor… but your trailer matters too! Neglecting wheel bearings can lead to:

❌ Overheated hubs
❌ Bearing failure
❌ Destroyed spindles
❌ Sitting on the side of the highway wondering where your wheel went 👀😂

✅ Check hubs for excessive heat after towing
✅ Keep bearings properly greased
✅ Inspect seals for leaks or water intrusion
✅ Don’t ignore grinding or humming noises
