As one of the most widely recognized vehicles the world has ever seen, the Ford Mustang is much more than just a car, it’s an iconic American brand. A car company doesn’t sell 9 million copies of the same nameplate over six different design generations for more than 50 consecutive years by accident. It takes an ongoing series of great Mustang models year after year and literally thousands of passionate Ford people – from executives and managers to engineers and marketers all the way to the assembly line workers and loyal Mustang owners and followers – to make such a consistent market success happen.

Since the car's introduction in April of 1964, Mustang has been the best-selling sports car in America. There have been more than 40 songs written and recorded about the Mustang, and it has appeared in more than 300 films and television series’ – including Bullitt, Gone in 60 Seconds, I am Legend, S*x and the City, Knight Rider, Need for Speed, and the James Bond films Goldfinger and Diamonds are Forever. Mustang is also the most requested licensing item of any Ford brand. Its name, image and likeness has been celebrated in American pop culture for more than a half-century with the creation of a wide variety of merchandise, including shirts, hats, jackets, toys, models, video games, watches, jewelry, luggage – even a special fragrance.

Mustang leads the nearly $1-billion aftermarket parts and accessories industry as the most personalized vehicle of all time, and has been recognized by SEMA as the most accessory friendly new vehicle. Not surprisingly, nearly every single version of the Mustang over the years enjoys an enthusiast following, whether simply by collectors or an entire club or online group. There are more than 250 Mustang-based enthusiast clubs across the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe and Australia.

As Mustang leaves its 50th anniversary in the rearview mirror with the introduction of an all-new Sixth Generation that will now be sold in markets across the globe, it gallops into the future as the longest-running American car in Ford showrooms.

2007 Mustang GT California Special

Back in 1968, an influential group of West Coast dealers convinced Ford to produce a limited-production Mustang with unique styling cues borrowed from Shelby Mustangs. Called the California Special, it was built with help from Shelby and sold exclusively in the western United States, to the tune of approximately 4,100 units.

Flash forward 39 years to a new Mustang platform with design ties to that original '68 version, throw in a revived relationship with Shelby, and you have the 2007 Mustang GT / California Special. Eagle-eyed spotters will notice a resemblance between the Cal Special and the 2007-2008 Shelby GT, as both cars actually began life as a Mustang GT Premium outfitted with the California Special Package 54C. Shelby nabbed the Cal Special’s unique front and rear fascia, leaving the side scoops, rolled exhaust tips, black GT/CS exterior striping and two-tone interior accents exclusive to the California Special. Ford’s premium 18-inch polished wheels officially rounded out the GT/CS package.

Since the California Special Package was only available on the Mustang GT premium coupe or convertible, standard equipment included leather seats, a Shaker 500 audio system, power everything, and of course the GT’s 300-horsepower 4.6 liter V-8, bolted to a five-speed manual transmission. Common options included a five-speed automatic transmission, Shaker 1000 audio system, satellite radio and heated seats. Another very common addition to the GT/CS was the Mustang GT Appearance Package, which added a hood scoop and an engine cover. Only five colors were available: Redfire Metallic, Performance White, Vista Blue Metallic, Ebony (Black), and Grabber Orange. And though the Cal Special’s interior was two-tone, at least one of those tones was black.

The modern California Special offered enthusiasts a unique Mustang edition slotted perfectly between the Mustang GT Premium and the Shelby GT. With great looks and an unmistakable design presence, the 2007 Mustang GT/CS is already considered a collectible in the motoring community. - See more at: http://racingedu.ford.com/enthusiasts/collector-vehicles/mustang/gtcs-2007/ .iQ4OOvm0.dpuf

2004 Mustang Mach 1

Because of a strong enthusiast response to the introduction of the 2003 Mustang Mach 1, Ford committed to another sales year of Mach 1 production to slot between the Mustang GT and the SVT Mustang Cobra. The 2004 model run was the Mustang's final year on the SN-95 platform so collectors and fans of the Fox-based cars were given one last chance to buy a new Mach 1.

Exterior paint colors offered in '04 included Oxford White, Black, Torch Red, Azure Blue, Dark Shadow Gray, Screaming Yellow and Competition Orange. With the original Mustang being launched in 1964, the 2004s including Mach 1s wore 40th Anniversary badges on the front fenders and rear decklid.

Again for 2004, the Mach 1 was powered by the 4.6L DOHC "mod" V-8 cranking out 305 horsepower at 5,800 rpm. An appearance upgrade gave the engine bare aluminum valve covers to replace the black-painted valve covers that were on the 2003 versions.

2001 Mustang Bullitt

In a throwback to the 1968 movie Mustang that bore its name, Ford launched the 2001 Mustang Bullitt GT after a concept version had won acclaim at the 2000 L.A. Auto Show. Based on the 2001 Mustang GT, the limited-production Bullitt featured a 4.6-liter V-8 tweaked for better airflow and power, including a cast-aluminum intake, twin 57-mm bore throttle body and high-flow mufflers.

Team Mustang also gave Bullitt a firmer, lowered suspension for tighter handling, as well as special exterior enhancements and interior touches meant to capture the spirit of the movie car. Unique wheels, "Bullitt" badging and a brushed-aluminum fuel-filler door helped complete the look, with a factory serialized identification label included to verify each 2001 Bullitt as a true collectible.
