MINNESOTA CAR BUYERS - did you know your trade-in vehicle can save you money on taxes?
This is one of the most underused money-saving tools in the Minnesota car buying process - and a lot of buyers don't know it exists.
Here's how it works:
In Minnesota, when you trade in your vehicle at a licensed dealership, the trade-in value is deducted from the purchase price BEFORE sales tax is calculated.
Real example:
You're buying a vehicle for $20,000.
You trade in your current car, valued at $6,000.
In Minnesota, you only pay the 6.875% sales tax on $14,000 - not the full $20,000.
That trade-in just saved you approximately $413 in sales tax compared to a state that doesn't offer this credit.
Why this matters for your decision:
- Trading in at a dealership can be more tax-efficient than selling privately in some situations
- Know your trade-in value before you negotiate - tools like KBB give you a realistic baseline
- Have your payoff amount ready if you still owe on your current vehicle
- Your trade-in condition, mileage, and service history all affect its value - come prepared
