A useful October job for Vermont drivers: give your winter supplies a quick check before you need them.

• Test the flashlight and pack spare batteries.
• Keep a blanket, warm gloves and an ice scraper or snow brush handy.
• Check that your phone charger works with your current phone.
• Add a small shovel, first-aid kit and reflective warning markers.
• Bring water, snacks and any necessary medicine for the trip. Follow medicine storage instructions—don’t leave temperature-sensitive items in the car.

Clocks fall back two weeks from today. 🔦
Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, which means more Vermont commutes in the dark, right as wet leaves, frost and road grime start showing up.

Take two minutes in the driveway this week:
• Turn your lights on and walk around the vehicle. Check low beams, high beams, brake lights, turn signals and reverse lights. A helper, or the reflection in a garage door or shop window, makes it easy.
• Look closely at the headlight lenses. Yellowed or cloudy plastic can dim and scatter your light.
• Wipe the lenses and taillights after messy drives. Road film builds up fast this time of year.
• Pay attention if oncoming drivers Keep flashing you. Your headlights may be aimed too high.

A fall car-care tip that starts at your feet: don’t stack floor mats.

Rubber mats are handy for Vermont mud, wet leaves and the slush season ahead. But putting one over an existing carpet mat can interfere with pedal movement. Remove the old mat before fitting its replacement.

While you’re there, check that the driver’s mat:
• Is the correct fit for your vehicle
• Is secured with the manufacturer’s retention clips or fasteners
• Lies flat, without curled or bunched-up edges
• Stays clear of the accelerator, brake and clutch pedal, if equipped

Recheck the fit whenever you take the mat out to clean it. If the anchors are broken or the mat won’t stay put, address that before driving.

A simple check to add to your next vacuum-and-cleanout day.
