A battery can seem perfectly fine in September—then struggle on the first cold Vermont morning.

Lower temperatures reduce the power a battery can deliver while the engine requires more effort to start. That combination often exposes a battery that was already becoming weak.

Watch for:

• Slower-than-normal cranking
• Dim lights while starting
• Corrosion around the battery terminals
• A battery approaching the end of its expected service life

Age alone doesn’t determine whether a battery needs replacement. A proper battery and charging-system test provides a much clearer answer.

If you’re unsure about yours, Priority Auto can test it before colder weather arrives.

Protect your vehicle before another Vermont winter.

Road salt and brine reach frame rails, seams, and other areas that are difficult to protect. Fluid Film Black creates a flexible, non-drying barrier that displaces moisture and creeps into those hard-to-reach spaces.

We’ll begin accepting reservations in mid-September for Saturday undercoating appointments starting in October.

Fluid Film Black undercoating: $250

Drop your vehicle off Friday night or Saturday morning before we open. We’ll complete the service Saturday and text your invoice. Once it’s paid, we can leave your key in a secure location of your choosing so you can pick up your vehicle whenever convenient during the remainder of the weekend.

Watch our page for the announcement when scheduling opens.

⛽ Does premium gas make every vehicle run better?

Usually, no.

Premium fuel has a higher octane rating, which helps prevent engine knock in vehicles designed for it. It doesn’t automatically contain more energy or provide extra horsepower, better mileage or a cleaner engine.

If your owner’s manual says regular fuel is recommended, buying premium is unlikely to provide a noticeable benefit. If it says premium is required, use it—running lower octane could reduce performance and cause engine knock.

The best fuel for your vehicle is the grade specified by its manufacturer, not necessarily the most expensive one at the pump.

Coolant color doesn’t tell the whole story.

Green, orange, yellow, blue and pink coolants aren’t automatically interchangeable. Color is chosen by the manufacturer and doesn’t reliably identify the coolant’s chemistry or vehicle compatibility.

Mixing incompatible types can reduce corrosion protection and may create deposits in the cooling system. The safe choice is to use the exact specification listed for your vehicle—not simply match the color already in the reservoir.

Early fall is also a good time to check coolant strength, condition and freeze protection before Vermont’s cold weather arrives.

Unsure what your vehicle requires? Priority Auto can test it and recommend the correct service without guessing.

Late-summer light check 🔦

Vermont evenings are arriving earlier, making this a good time to spend five minutes checking your vehicle’s exterior lights:

• Low and high beams
• Turn signals and hazard lights
• Brake lights
• Reverse and license-plate lights
• Headlight lenses for dirt or cloudiness

A helper—or your vehicle’s reflection in a garage door—can make checking the rear lights easy.

If a light is dim, flickering or completely out, the problem may be the bulb, socket, wiring or lens—not necessarily just a burned-out bulb.

Need help finding the cause? Give us a call.

A little automotive history…

In 1902, Mary Anderson was riding a New York City streetcar during snowy weather when she noticed the driver struggling to keep the windshield clear. Drivers sometimes opened their windows—or stopped completely—to wipe away the snow.

Her solution was a rubber blade controlled by a lever inside the vehicle. On November 10, 1903, she received U.S. Patent No. 743,801 for the first effective windshield-clearing device.

What was once considered unnecessary eventually became standard automotive equipment. Today, we can’t imagine driving through a Vermont winter without it!

If your wipers streak, chatter or leave sections of glass untouched, replacing them before fall weather arrives is inexpensive insurance for better visibility.

When did you last check your tire pressure?

Tire pressure should be checked when the tires are cold—before driving or after the vehicle has been parked for several hours. Use the pressure listed on the driver’s-door placard, not the maximum pressure printed on the tire.

Proper inflation helps with tire wear, handling, fuel economy, and braking. If one tire repeatedly loses pressure, don’t just keep adding air—it may have a puncture, leaking valve stem, or wheel-sealing problem.

Priority Auto can inspect it and help keep you safely on the road.
