Technical Tuesday π§
Your car runs on software β and just like your phone, sometimes it needs an update.
Modern vehicles from Ford and GM have dozens of computers on board. The engine control module, transmission control module, body control module β each one runs its own software, and manufacturers regularly release updates to fix bugs, improve performance, and address issues discovered after the vehicle left the factory. This process is called a reflash or a software update, and it is more common than most people realize.
You might need one if your vehicle is running rough, shifting oddly, getting worse fuel economy than expected, or if a warning light keeps coming back after other repairs have been made. Sometimes the hardware is fine and the software just needs to be brought current. A reflash can also be required as part of a recall or a Technical Service Bulletin repair.
Here is something worth knowing: many shops send this work out to the dealer, which adds time and cost. We do Ford and GM software updates right here in our shop, in-house. That means faster turnaround and one less handoff for your vehicle.
Did You Know? A single modern vehicle can have over 100 million lines of software code β more than it takes to run some commercial aircraft.
