We like the old stuff.

Classic transmissions are simpler than anything built today, and they're genuinely fun to work on. The hard part is parts. A few companies still make them, but they can be tough to track down.

The other challenge is documentation. Modern units come with diagrams to reference. The old ones don't. That part comes down to experience.

Building for power? The transmission has to keep up.

The mistake is leaving it stock. Put 800 horsepower in front of a factory-spec unit and it will not last, because the internals were never designed to hold what's being pushed through them.

Towing this fall? Two things before you hook up.

Know your actual tow rating, not what you assume it is. And use tow haul mode, or shut overdrive off.

Here's the reasoning: higher RPM means higher line pressure. If you're on a rural road at 40 and it drops into overdrive, you're running low pressure while still dragging the full weight. Tow haul keeps the pressure where it needs to be.

Why towing eats transmissions.

From the factory there's a small amount of slippage built into every shift. Put 15,000 pounds behind the truck and that same shift is doing far more work, so it slips a little more, every time.

That slippage makes heat. And heat kills transmissions. It burns the fluid, the fluid loses viscosity, and once it's cooked it can't hold anymore.

What a heavy duty tow package actually is.

It isn't one part, it's a build. High energy frictions that handle heat and grip harder. A shift kit that raises line pressure so shifts land firmer and faster with less slippage.

On diesels we'll usually add a billet torque converter, since billet handles heat without warping the way stamped steel does. Beyond that, billet input and intermediate shafts.

Vibration at speed. Squeak at low speed. Same part.

A U-joint is shaped like a cross with caps on each end, and inside those caps are needle bearings. When they dry out and start failing, the joint stops moving the way it should.

That's the vibration you feel and the squeak you hear. Ignore it long enough and a U-joint can let go, which turns a repair into a safety problem.

A standard rebuild is all new bearings and seals. Those are coming out regardless, because that's what fails and that's what you're in there for.

Everything past that gets decided by inspection. Ring and pinion, carrier, axles. Until it's open, anyone quoting you the full scope is guessing.
