NATIONAL PAPERCLIP DAY
National Paperclip Day on May 29 celebrates a small but handy invention. Yes, even the paperclip has its own day of honor. This quirky National Day celebrates the well-known piece of curved wire that keeps our papers together and helps us stay organized.

While many may have claimed earlier invention of the paperclip, according to the Early Office Museum, Samuel B. Fay received the first patent for a "bent wire paper clip" in the United States in 1867. The original intention of Fay’s clip was to attach tickets to fabric. However, U.S. patent 64,088 recognized that paperclips could also hold papers together.

As many as 50 others received patents for similar designs before 1899. One other notable name receiving a patent for his paperclip design in the United States was Erlman J. Wright in 1877. At that time, he advertised his clip for use in fastening newspapers.

The Gem paperclip, which was most likely in production in Britain in the early 1870s by The Gem Manufacturing Company, was never patented. However, it is the most common type of wire paperclip we still use today. In 1904, Cushman & Denison registered a trademark for The "Gem" name in connection with paperclips.

5 Other Uses of Paper Clips:
Replace a zipper tab
Unclog a spray bottle
Unclog a single-serve coffee maker
Hem holder
Emergency hooks for broken necklaces

NATIONAL HAMBURGER DAY
National Hamburger Day on May 28th wraps up National Burger Month and also ushers in the summer grilling season.

Hamburger. Seasoned ground beef, grilled, and placed between two slices of bread or a bun. We even top them with sauteed onions, peppers, pickles, sliced onions, or cheese. Add condiments such as ketchup, mustard, or mayo. Any of these combinations create a modern American version of a hamburger.

The world's largest hamburger was 2,566 lb - 9 oz and achieved in Pilsting, Germany, on 9 July 2017.

Much controversy surrounds the origin of the hamburger. However, it most likely first appeared in the 19th or early 20th centuries. Over the years, the hamburger has become a culinary icon in the United States.

NATIONAL FLIP FLOP DAY
Each year on the Wednesday after Memorial Day, National Flip Flop Day encourages us to wear our favorite flip flops and show them off!

Flip flops are a lightweight footwear is designed to protect our tender feet from the hot ground and sand. These thong style sandals are by no means new to footwear. They’ve been around for thousands of years. However, the term “flip flop” has applied to flat-soled sandals with straps between the first and second toes and across the top of the foot since the 1960s. The term also describes someone who changes their mind or an electronic component.

National Flip Flop Day strictly recognizes the footwear that makes a flip-flopping sound as we walk, slapping the back of our feet as we head to the beach or make way for the pool. These sandals come in all shades and colors, beaded, bejeweled, and even bedazzled. Some are made of leather and cork. They’re also easy to remove and put on quickly making it easy to go to from the beach to a semi-formal dining event in an instant!

MEMORIAL DAY
Each year in the United States, Americans observe the Federal holiday, Memorial Day, the last Monday in May. It honors and remembers all men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Traditionally on Memorial Day, the flag of the United States of America is raised briskly to the top of the staff then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position where it remains until noon. At noon, it is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day.

When the flag is at half-staff, the position is in remembrance of the more than one million men and women who gave their lives for their country. Raising the flag at noon signifies the nation lives, that the country is resolved not to let their sacrifice be in vain but to rise up in their honor and continue to fight for liberty and justice for all.

In the United States, Memorial Day also traditionally marks the beginning of summer.

NATIONAL LUCKY PENNY DAY
On May 23 is National Lucky Penny Day and we are hoping you'll have good luck all day long. Heads or tails, does it matter which side you find your penny?

Years ago a penny was able to buy something. (Check out National Taffy Day - to see what we used to get for a penny.) Today, due to inflation, the penny does not buy much of anything. The metal value and cost of minting pennies exceed their face value. Many nations have stopped minting equivalent value coins and efforts are being made to end the routine use of pennies in several countries including the United States.

5 Valuable Pennies
Pennies may not have much value these days. However, there are a few pennies that have made a mint for the owner:
1943-D: Lincoln Bronze Penny sold for $1.7 million.

1944-S: Lincoln Steel Penny sold for $373,750.

1943-S: Lincoln Penny made of Bronze sold for $282,000.

1909 VDB: Lincoln Penny sold for $258,500.

1856: Flying Eagle Penny sold for $172,500.

When you are out and about, look on the ground for pennies. It just might be your lucky day!

NATIONAL ROAD TRIP DAY
The Friday before Memorial Day is declared National Road Trip Day and serves as the official kickoff of the summer road trip season. Millions of Americans hit the road each year over the long weekend to visit friends and family, while paying tribute to our American heroes.

Americans are anxious to hit the road to kick off the summer road trip season. A recent surveys suggest an overwhelming majority prefer driving as the leading choice for reaching their summer destinations. According to The Vacationer, 80 percent of Americans are going to take a road trip this summer. In fact, most are making plans for Memorial Day weekend and plan on traveling by car.

Whether you’re seeking adventure, visiting family and friends, or making a business connection, road trips are often a rite of passage. National Road Trip day is about making this vacation season all about the journey to the destination.

There are two kinds of people who take road trips. The tourist takes their time getting there and taking the scenic routes. The pilot enjoys seeing the country from the car, sets a course, and frowns upon unscheduled stops or side trips. If you’re going together, you might want to discuss a compromise before hitting the road!

No matter the destination, road trips include an element of expectation and rarely disappoint. The best road trips bring us closer to people over a stick of beef jerky and car karaoke. They connect us to places through memories, a postcard, and the kindness of strangers. Are you ready to discover exciting new destinations? Let's hit the road and let the Summer times roll!

NATIONAL RESCUE DOG DAY
Each year on May 20, we recognizes all the benefits of allowing a four-legged canine to adopt you into their immeasurably lovable life on National Rescue Dog Day.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), approximately 3.3 million dogs enter shelters every year. When these abandoned and abused animals find their way to a shelter, each one needs a forever home and their potential is limitless. They're rescue dogs.

No matter their size, color, or breed, dogs will find a way to nuzzle, fetch, or beg their way into your heart. You will find it hard not to scratch one behind the ear.

Rescue dogs often overcome extreme obstacles. And yet, they provide comfort, security, and friendship as family pets. Rescue dogs are also capable of much more. With training, they contribute to the independence of people with disabilities as service animals and give comfort to the elderly. In these circumstances, they become our eyes, ears, or legs as well as our best friend.

Rescue dogs provide a variety of therapeutic benefits, too. Children, teens, and adults with autism may benefit from services provided by trained rescue dogs. As emotional support companions, rescue dogs help to relieve anxiety, depression, and PTSD among the military or those who suffer from mental illness.

They make excellent teachers, too. Rescue dogs show children about caring and kindness. Rescue dogs can even be trained to rescue us from dangerous situations or help to investigate the cause of a fire.

When it comes to four-legged friends, they improve the human condition by leaps and bounds, barks, and yips. It is hard to imagine a more helpful, worthy companion. It's time to give them a treat!
