NATIONAL V-J DAY | SEPTEMBER 2
On September 2nd, National V-J Day (Victory over Japan Day) recognizes Allied Forces' victory over Japan during World War II. Officials announced the surrender of Japan to the Allies on August 15, 1945. The official signing of surrender took place on September 2, 1945, officially ending World War II.


Between 50 to 80 million lives were lost during World War II. These numbers include both military and civilian lives. Fought on every continent except Antarctica, the war consumed entire cities. More than 50 countries took up arms. Even those who maintained isolationist stances held sympathies for one side or another.

Militaries fought on the land and sea and in the air. Civilians often had front row seats to the devastation. When they didn't, technology brought reports to them more quickly. Radio broadcasts and war correspondents informed the public with first-hand details.

For six long years, the world endured rations, victory gardens, evacuations, drills, and an entirely different way of life - an uncertain future.

Six-years of sacrifice and horrors preceded this moment. All around the world, celebrations erupted. However, there would be years of reconciliations, discoveries, and coming to terms with the damage done to relations and humanity.

NATIONAL TOASTED MARSHMALLOW DAY
On August 30, National Toasted Marshmallow Day celebrates one of America's favorite fire-roasted treats. Be sure to stock up on marshmallows so you can celebrate!


Get your friends together and gather up some firewood. Grab a few long sticks and a bag of marshmallows. Then, make plans for a great night! Toasted marshmallows are a special part of summer evenings around a bonfire. Also, what better way to kick off a long weekend than to enjoy a delicious, warm, gooey, toasted marshmallow? Add a pair of graham crackers and a chocolate bar - and ask for s'more!

Depending upon personal preference, heat marshmallows to various degrees. Some like them gently toasted. Others look for a charred outer layer. Charring a marshmallow is simple. Hold it in the flame until the sugar catches fire. Then, carefully blow it out. It's important not to wave it around as you'll only fan the flames. Marshmallows also come in a variety of flavors and sizes for maximum toasting opportunities. For a fun alternative, try roasting Marshmallow Peeps. Watch them closely as the granular sugar coating will burn more quickly.

Believe it or not, marshmallows date back to Ancient Egypt. The mallow plant provided a sap the Egyptians used to create a candy with nuts and honey.

Ligonier, Indiana holds an annual Marshmallow Festival. It is also the marshmallow capital of the world. How sweet is that?

Homemade marshmallows use sugar, unflavored gelatin, corn syrup, and flavoring.

NATIONAL BOW TIE DAY
National Bow Tie Day on August 28 encourages everyone to wear this style of tie with panache! It's versatile, too. Whether you want to look dapper or humorous, this tie enables you to modify your attire to your mood and atmosphere.


The Croatian mercenaries during the Prussian wars of the 17th century were the originators of the bow tie. This bow tie consisted of a scarf around the neck to hold together the opening of their shirts. Using the name cravat (which derived from the French for “Croat”), the upper classes in France soon adopted this idea.

Styles range to suit attire and occasion. This fascinating article of clothing crosses eras and generations, too. Not only that but men and women both wear bow ties. As a fashion accessory, its statements may be bold or subtle since they come in a broad range of fabrics, colors and sizes.

NATIONAL KISS AND MAKE UP DAY
National Kiss and Make up Day reminds us to end the quarrels, arguments, and fights. Instead, come to an agreement with anyone you've had a disagreement with on National Kiss and Make up Day on August 25.


Similar to the April 2nd National Reconciliation Day, THIS National Day gives us a chance to make amends. Each one of us has had a fight with a loved one at some point in our lives. Whether it is between you and a friend, family member, neighbor or co-worker after time has passed, do you remember the cause? Who was even at fault? Do you want the discord to go on any longer? That is probably the most important question of all.

Offering an apology, or simply just breaking the silence can be enough to begin the healing. Strive to compromise. Even in a no-win situation, if the relationship is worth preserving agreeing to disagree may be the only resolution. When we talk through issues calmly after a serious dispute, we often find both sides misunderstood the other person. Looking back, hopefully, we can find something to laugh about and repair the relationship.

Factoid: Kissing prompts your brain to release a happy elixir of feel-good chemicals like serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin. This isn't only important for your happiness, it may also help to strengthen your relationship.
