NATIONAL WANNA GET AWAY DAY
With the summer travel season upon us, National Wanna Get Away Day celebrates our freedom to get away on June 18. Whether you plan a vacation today or take an impromptu vacation, celebrate today's National Day by taking steps to get away!


Planning memorable trips and getaways brings out the adventurer in all of us! These getaways take us to the family we long to see and historic places. We seek the sun, sand, big cities and the countryside. It is a national pastime with deep roots - one that connects all of us to the people and places most important in our lives. This is the perfect National Day for celebrating, dreaming, and planning all the adventures you will take this year and every year after!

Planning a getaway is more than just building memories. It's also about taking care of your physical and mental well-being. Our bodies need time to unwind, relax, and rejuvenate from stress, requiring recovery periods to avoid chronic stress. Getting away, even for a weekend, helps us balance our mental health. Plus, a getaway broadens our horizons as we try new things and explore new places!

NATIONAL FUDGE DAY
National Fudge Day comes around each year on June 16, allowing us to indulge in one of our favorite flavors--fudge! This delicious confectionery food holiday brings sweet joy to our taste buds!


Fudge has been around since about 1886 when the earliest records of documented reference are found. In a letter written by Emelyn Battersby Hartridge, a student at Vassar College, she mentioned fudge being sold to students at the college. However, many believe fudge actually originated as a mistake that when a baker may have "fudged" a batch of caramels for Valentine's Day. However it happened, fudge became extremely popular. By the late 19th century, shops on Mackinac Island, Michigan, began to produce similar fudge and sell it to summer vacationers. Interestingly, fudge is still made in a few of those original shops located on the island.

Some of the most familiar fudge flavors are chocolate, chocolate nut, peanut butter, maple, and maple nut. Fudge lends itself to experimentation when it comes to flavors. Blending favorites or even a moment of inspiration will create a new delicious kind of fudge. Adding bits of candy, nuts, or sprinkles on National Fudge Day can bring just the right celebratory burst of excitement to an old favorite.

Fudge became a symbol of American desserts and easy to make. A simple recipe of sugar, butter, milk or cream, and desired flavorings make it a favorite in candy shops and bakeries around the world. As different flavors emerge, so does the desire to grab every variation!

NATIONAL FLAG DAY
National Flag Day happens each year on June 14 to honor Old Glory and commemorate the adoption of the United States flag on June 14, 1777. The holiday is a day that Americans show respect for the U.S. Flag and what it represents.


While Betsy Ross has been given credit for stitching together the first American flag, there isn't any sound evidence supporting the story. However, there isn't any to disprove it, either. Part of the conflict is there were several designs in consideration at the same time. There were many flag makers and more than one claim to the first. During Ross's Revolutionary time, several standards were carried bearing red and white stripes and varying symbols where the blue field and stars now reside.

Another who laid claim to the first design was Francis Hopkinson. His request for compensation for his design was denied because others contributed to the design final design.

Since 1777, the design of the flag has been officially modified 26 times. For 47 years, the 48-star flag was in effect. In 1959, the 49-star version became official on July 4. President Eisenhower ordered the 50-star flag on August 21, 1959. Seventeen-year-old Robert G. Heft of Ohio designed the 50-star American flag. His was one of the more than 1,500 designs that were submitted to President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

NATIONAL SEWING MACHINE DAY
Each year on June 13, National Sewing Machine Day honors an invention that has kept us in stitches for over 150 years. Follow along as we try to stitch together a brief history and some fun facts, too.


Before the invention of the sewing machine, tailors and sewists created clothing by hand, one single stitch at a time. The invention of the sewing machine brought about revolutionary change. Not only did it boost an entire industry, but it also changed the way we viewed the garments we wore. However, the development of the sewing machine took time.

Skilled cabinet-maker and English inventor, Thomas Saint, received the first patent for a design of a sewing machine in 1790. He intended his design to sew on leather and canvas. However, he never advertised it and no evidence of the design, other than his drawings, could be found. In 1874, William Newton Wilson found Saint's drawings in the London Patent Office. With some minor adjustments, Wilson built a working model. The London Science Museum currently owns Wilson's model. Other sewing machine inventors include:

Walter Hunt invented the first American lockstitch sewing machine in 1832.

John Greenough patented the first sewing machine in the United States in 1842.

In 1851, another inventor, Isaac Singer, developed a sewing machine model that would endure and also thrust him into court with Elias Howe over patent infringement.

Industrial use of the sewing machine reduced the burden placed upon housewives, moving clothing production from them and seamstresses to large-scale factories. This also resulted in a decrease in production time which caused the price of clothing to drop considerably.

Today, many people are again becoming interested in the art of sewing and making their own clothing. Crafts fairs and flea markets are filled with booths full of beautiful sewing machine-made clothes and craft items. Quilters across America are also known as sewing machine experts!

NATIONAL RED ROSE DAY
Each year on June 12, people in the U.S. recognize National Red Rose Day. This beautiful National Day honors the flower that is a symbol of love and romance and the June birth flower, the red rose.


Red roses were used in many early cultures as decorations in wedding ceremonies and wedding attire. It was through this practice the red rose eventually became known as a symbol of love and romance. The tradition of giving red roses as the strongest message of love is still practiced today.

Red roses offer more than the message of love. They are also known for their fragrance. They are also cultivated for perfumes as well as brewing healing teas.

In June, red roses are in bloom in flower gardens across the United States. Their beauty and sweet scent fill the air with happiness. Furthermore, roses come in a wide variety of cultivars. From low-growing shrubs with dainty blossoms to long-stemmed robust plants, roses offer deep scarlets and bright berry-colored reds.
