🚨EMERGENCY RESPONSE 🚨– ENVIRONMENTAL INCIDENT
At approximately 2:00 AM, Keystone Emergency Spill Response was dispatched to a tractor trailer accident involving the release of 300+ gallons of milk into a creek.
Upon arrival, crews determined the tractor trailer had traveled down a steep embankment, coming to rest above the waterway — not in the creek itself. Due to the position of the trailer, milk was discharging from the vent ports and flowing directly into the creek, requiring immediate environmental response.
Environmental Impact – Why Milk is a Concern:
Although not classified as a hazardous material, milk can have serious environmental consequences when introduced into waterways. As it decomposes, it significantly increases biological oxygen demand (BOD), which reduces dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in the water. This can result in:
• Stress or death to fish and aquatic life
• Disruption of the natural ecosystem
• Odor and overall water quality degradation
This incident also involved diesel fuel contamination, further increasing the urgency of response efforts.
Response Actions:
• Rapid containment and mitigation of milk entering the waterway
• Deployment of multiple containment booms to protect downstream areas
• Remediation of diesel fuel within the creek
• Stabilization of the embankment to prevent additional discharge
Ongoing Monitoring and Compliance:
Keystone Emergency Spill Response is conducting Dissolved Oxygen (DO) monitoring over the coming days to track water quality and ensure proper recovery of the ecosystem.
We are working closely with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) and providing all required reporting and updates in accordance with regulatory standards.
Coordinated Effort:
This incident was successfully managed through strong coordination between response teams. V&M Towing handled the recovery of the tractor trailer, allowing environmental crews to safely perform mitigation and remediation operations.
Great work by all parties involved, from emergency responders to recovery and environmental team, ensuring the situation was handled quickly, safely, and professionally.
Current Status:
All monitoring to date shows positive progress, with conditions improving following emergency remediation efforts.
Keystone Emergency Spill Response remains committed to protecting waterways, providing 24/7 emergency response, and operating under PA DEP Act 2 standards and environmental best practices.
