Two ways to break up a paint job, and people have been arguing about them for seventy years.

Scallops or flames.

Scallops are clean and sharp. Long tapered points, a second color laid over the first, the kind of thing Larry Watson and Jerry Drake built whole reputations on. Cool, classy, a little bit space-age.

Flames are the other kind of loud. Licks crawling back from the nose, hot rod attitude you can see coming a block away. Traditional as it gets.

Some cars wear one perfectly and would look wrong in the other. A few pull off both.

In an era when custom Mercurys were dominated by dark, dramatic finishes, Gene Winfield took a completely different direction.
