Next up in our Innovation in Motion series, let’s turn our focus to how the steering wheel has evolved from mechanical function to a safety and technological hub.

PAST: The Model T’s steering wheel was a manual rack-and-pinion design. Vehicles did not see airbags until the 1970s when Ford and General Motors began experimenting with them.

PRESENT: The modern steering wheel features a sleek design, often with the “AIRBAG” logo on it, and it inflates upon impact.

FUTURE: Airbags will continue to evolve, using cameras and sensors to deploy just before a crash, reducing injuries. Innovations like retractable steering wheels will create new design and safety opportunities for both conventional and autonomous vehicles.

Continuing our Innovation in Motion Series, let’s “shift gears” and see how this feature reflects the evolution of driver interaction.

PAST: The gear shift has transformed dramatically over the decades. In the early years of companies like Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler, gear shifts were often column or floor mounted levers that emphasized durability and driver control.

PRESENT: Today, the gear shift has been reimagined as a refined interface with electronic shifters, rotary dials, and push-button systems that improve ergonomics and free up interior space.

FUTURE: It is unlikely that this trend for gear shifts is going anywhere anytime soon, as designers get to be creative and find new ways to evolve the gear shift.
