The things we tell every new (and not-so-new) trailer customer…

RE-TORQUE YOUR LUG NUTS.

New wheels can settle after you start towing. Check them before the first trip, then again after roughly 10, 25 and 50 miles. After that, check them periodically—and anytime a wheel has been removed.

Use a torque wrench and the correct torque specification for your wheel and stud combination. Don’t just hit them with an impact and call it good.

CHECK YOUR TIRE PRESSURE COLD.

Check trailer tires before the trip, while they’re cold. Use the pressure specified for your trailer/tire setup and don’t rely on how the tire looks. Underinflation creates heat, and heat is one of the fastest ways to ruin a trailer tire.

CHECK THE ENTIRE CONNECTION.

- Make sure the coupler is fully seated and latched.
- Safety chains connected.
- Breakaway cable connected independently.
- Electrical plug secure.
- Jack completely raised.
- Then give the connection one more look before you move.

WALK AROUND THE TRAILER.

- Check the tires and wheels.
- Check the lights.
- Check your straps, chains and load securement.
- Make sure ramps, doors and gates are latched.
- Look underneath for anything hanging or dragging.

It takes less than a minute.

Whether you’re towing a small utility trailer, an equipment trailer or a hot-shot car hauler, these are the basics that prevent expensive—and sometimes dangerous—problems down the road.

A good towing routine starts before the trailer ever moves.
