There is a stretch of road between Austin and San Antonio where the posted speed limit is 85 miles an hour, and it is the highest posted limit anywhere in the United States. 🛣️ Not a rumor, not a loophole. Signed, legal, 85.
It is on the toll lanes of State Highway 130, out through the farmland east of Austin on the way down toward Seguin. The road was built dead straight and wide across flat blackland prairie with hardly any crossing traffic, and when it opened the state set the limit where the engineering allowed. The practical effect is strange the first time. You are doing 85, everything feels perfectly calm, and the odometer is just rolling.
What is more Texan than the number is the reason it exists at all. The main interstate between Austin and San Antonio had become a parking lot, so rather than widen it the state ran a second road around the whole problem and let people pay to go fast. Nobody thought that was unusual. In a state this large, distance is not treated as an obstacle so much as an expense, and 85 is simply the price of getting your afternoon back. 🚙
