🇺🇸⭐️🎗️Memorial Day formally known as Decoration Day

💐The holiday originated in the aftermath of the American Civil War (which claimed over 600,000 lives) as devastated communities began decorating fallen soldiers' graves with spring flowers.

🪦The first major observance took place on May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery, where flags and flowers were placed on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers.

🪖Following World War I, the holiday was expanded from honoring only Civil War casualties to remembering all American service members who died in any conflict.

🦅The term "Memorial Day" began to be used more frequently after World War I, and was officially adopted as the holiday's name in 1967.

⭐️National Moment of Remembrance: At 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day, Americans are encouraged to pause for a one-minute moment of silence to reflect on the ultimate sacrifice made by fallen service members.

🇺🇸Flag Etiquette: The U.S. flag should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon, after which it is raised to the top of the staff for the rest of the day.
