This Honda CR-V came in making a significant internal engine rattle.

The technician pulled the dipstick.

There was no oil showing on it.

And there was no obvious external oil leak documented during the inspection.

That raised a different concern: the engine was consuming oil.

The repair included restoring the oil level, replacing the PCV valve and performing an induction service.

But the important lesson is not that one part magically fixed the problem.

The oil level still needs to be watched.

An engine can be using oil even when there is no puddle underneath the car.

Would you put serious money into a 1997 Toyota Tacoma with more than 264,000 miles?

That question is more complicated than it sounds.

This Tacoma needed repairs in several areas, including damaged electrical wiring, rear axle and brake work, engine oil leaks, steering components, a CV axle and worn belts.

It also needed maintenance that had accumulated over time.

At first glance, a large repair bill on a nearly 30 year old truck may seem difficult to justify.

But there is another side to the calculation.

For someone who already owns a solid older vehicle outright, the comparison is not simply repair bill versus zero.

The real comparison may be repair cost versus replacing the vehicle, taking on another monthly payment, higher insurance and an entirely different set of unknowns.

That does not make every old vehicle worth fixing.

It does mean mileage alone should not decide.

The inspection, condition of the vehicle, repair plan and realistic replacement cost all matter.

This BMW X5 overheated twice while being driven on the highway.
Coolant had already been added once because the level was low.
But that still left an important question:
Why was the coolant disappearing?
Testing found no hydrocarbons in the cooling system during the test.
The thermostat was taking longer than normal to open.
The nearby hoses were old and worn.
Then a pressure test found the coolant reservoir cracked and leaking.
The repair addressed the reservoir, thermostat, related hoses and worn belt, followed by refilling and checking the system again.
An overheating warning tells you what the vehicle is experiencing.

A BMW X5 overheated twice on the highway. Testing found a thermostat opening slowly and a cracked coolant reservoir that was leaking.

This F-150 didn't come in complaining about an oil leak.
It came in because the check engine light was on.
Then we checked the rest of the truck.
The engine oil level was so low it didn't register on the dipstick.
Underneath, we found heavy oil residue around the oil pan area.
And on the shop floor?
A long, very visible trail of oil.
That's an important distinction.
“Low on oil” tells you the condition of the oil level.
It doesn't tell you where the oil went.
You still have to inspect the vehicle and find the source.
On this 175K-mile F-150, the inspection identified the oil pan gasket area as the external leak source. The repair plan called for repairing or resealing the oil pan, cleaning away the old oil and then rechecking for any additional leaks.
Two real inspection photos tell this story better than stock photography ever could.

A hybrid still needs maintenance.
It just means there are more systems to think about.
A 2015 Lexus RX450h recently came into Chuck’s Auto Repair – North Seattle for its 90K service.
This visit included familiar maintenance such as:
Engine oil and filters
Spark plugs
Brake fluid
But this hybrid also required separate service for:
The gasoline engine cooling system
The hybrid cooling system
And because it is an AWD vehicle, the rear differential maintenance history mattered too.
The inspection also found a leaking axle seal and torn front CV axle boots, which shows another reason we do not treat major maintenance as one generic package.
The schedule tells us what to check.
The service history tells us what may already have been done.
The inspection tells us what condition the vehicle is actually in today.

“If my front tires are worn out, why can't I just replace the front two?”

That's a fair question.

We recently inspected a 2013 AWD Toyota RAV4 with a very clear front-to-rear tread difference:

Front left: 2.5/32"
Front right: 1.5/32"

But both rear tires still measured:

5.5/32"

Because this is an AWD vehicle, the condition of all four tires matters.

Toyota also cautions against mixing tires with remarkably different treadwear.

That does not mean:

“AWD always means you have to buy four tires.”

The right answer starts with measuring what is actually on the vehicle.

On this RAV4, replacing only the two worn fronts would still leave a significant tread difference across the AWD system, so we recommended a matched set of four.

Multiple warning lights come on in your Subaru.

You scan it and see a transmission code.

Does that mean the whole CVT is done?

Not automatically.

A 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid recently came into our North Seattle shop after the check-engine and hill-start-assist lights appeared. After driving, the owner had also seen ABS, stability-control and AT oil-temperature warnings.

A scan showed several stored faults, including:

P2763 — Lock-Up Duty Solenoid Circuit High

Here's the important part:

The code was a clue.

It wasn't the entire diagnosis.

The technician evaluated the exact hybrid CVT application and the other available information. The repair ultimately involved replacing the CVT valve body instead of automatically installing an entire transmission.

Even more interesting: by the time the technician test-drove the car, the warning light wasn't on and no drivability problem was reproduced—but the history codes were still there.

That's why we keep saying:

A scan is not the same thing as a diagnosis.

Honda Maintenance Minder gets more interesting once you get past A1 and B16.

Take code 4.

It doesn't automatically mean the exact same service on every Honda.

On a current CR-V, Honda uses code 4 for spark plugs and valve-clearance inspection.

On a current Pilot, that same code also includes timing-belt replacement and water-pump inspection.

That's a pretty big difference under the same number.

Codes 3, 5, 6 and 7 have their own vehicle-specific details too.

And Honda's B service is more than an oil change. It includes oil and filter service plus a broader inspection of areas such as the brakes, steering, suspension, fluids and other systems.

The good news?

You don't have to figure any of that out before calling us.

Your Honda dashboard says A1.

Or B16.

Or maybe you see something like A137, like the real Honda Maintenance Minder display we photographed during an inspection.

What does it all mean?

The trick is to stop reading the entire combination as the name of one service.

Break it apart.

A1

A = engine oil service
1 = tire rotation

At Chuck’s Auto Repair – North Seattle, when we perform an oil change, a fresh oil filter goes in too.

Now look at:

B16

B = oil/filter service plus Honda’s specified inspections
1 = tire rotation
6 = rear differential fluid where equipped

That’s why the exact Honda matters.

A front-wheel-drive Civic doesn’t have the same maintenance requirements as an AWD CR-V or Pilot.

Your commute is only five miles.

But it takes 30 minutes.

That matters.

A car crawling through North Seattle traffic is living a very different mechanical life than one cruising five miles on the freeway.

Think about what happens:

Start.
Accelerate.
Brake.
Idle.
Move 100 feet.
Brake again.
Repeat.

That can mean:

• More operating time per mile
• More brake applications
• More low-speed cooling demand
• More acceleration cycles
• Less sustained cruising

A healthy vehicle is designed to handle traffic. The point isn’t to make stop-and-go driving sound scary.

The point is that low average speed does not automatically mean low mechanical use.

If most of your driving is Roosevelt Way, Northgate, Green Lake, or other North Seattle traffic, tell your service advisor.

That information can matter when diagnosing things like:

A/C that gets warm while stopped
Temperature changes in traffic
Brake noise or vibration
Slow cranking
Transmission behavior
Steering or suspension concerns
