How Do I Get Mold Out of My Car?

The first thing I’d look for isn’t the mold.

It’s the moisture.

If water is still getting into the vehicle—or sitting underneath the carpet, padding, seats, or trunk area—cleaning the visible mold may only fix what you can see.

A better approach is to find where the water came from, figure out how far it traveled, then clean and dry the affected materials based on what they actually need.

Sometimes that’s a small area. Sometimes the carpet or padding needs a closer look.

Don’t just clean the spot. Find out why the spot appeared.

What Causes Mold Inside a Car?

From what we see, mold usually starts with one thing: moisture that stayed too long.

It could come from a window left open, a clogged sunroof drain, worn weather stripping, a windshield leak, or water collecting under the carpet or in the trunk.

The tricky part is that the visible mold may only be the symptom. If the source of the moisture is still there, cleaning the surface may not solve the problem.

Find the water first. Then deal with the mold.
