You call us tow truck drivers. You call us in your time of need. You call us because you have nowhere else to turn. Weather you car won’t start or you locked your keys inside or you break down you call us in a panic. At that moment we are your concern, the only person you want to be there for you. We come fix you up and then just that quick we are but a distant memory. Let me take a minute of your time to tell you what we are.

We are not tow truck drivers, we are towing operators. We go through extensive training for the services that we perform. You think that our day consists of going from car to car to truck towing breakdowns, jumping batteries, and unlocking doors. Yes that is PART of it, but there is much more than that.
Being a towing operator is a lifestyle, not a job. That means there is no 9-5, no making plans for a dinner date or a last minute movie. We come to work and we go home at the end of our shift SOMETIMES. Other times we stay for double or triple shifts. We get called in all hours of the night weather just getting home from a shift or at 1am for accidents or massive recovery operations that take 10-15 hours or more to complete at times. We see things that most people would never ever want to see. We go through emotional and stressful situations constantly. We don’t get 3 meals a day. Sometimes we are lucky if we eat once a day. We work in the harshest of conditions from sweltering heat to bitter cold, In the sun, mud, slush, snow and pouring rain. We risk our lives on the sides of highways with traffic blowing by us at 60-80 miles per hour everyday. And we know that each time we step out of our truck it’s a gamble. One towing operator is killed every 6 days in this profession. That’s an average of one operator per week! If you see flashing lights on the side of the road slow down, move over if you can and give us room. Did you know there is a monument is Tennessee called the wall of the fallen strictly dedicated to towing operators? Yes you may see different company names on the sides of trucks but we are a brotherhood, a family. We help each other. When we see another operator on the side of the road we pull over behind them to offer protection for them to give them a better chance of going home to their loved ones that day. Weather we personally know them or not we do it.
So the next time you call for a tow truck or a service truck remember these things. Say thank you, be polite and know that we WILL get you taken care of and back home to your loved ones.
We do this because we have a passion to help people. We are towing operators.

There are a LOT of young, inexperienced drivers that frequent this page.
It's awesome that ya'll come here and share your experiences and learn something from the stuff posted here.
Just a word of wisdom from somebody that has lived to tow another day for a while now.....
When operators post vids here of traffic refusing to yield on the interstate (particularly on the narrow left shoulder/and/or up against a barrier wall)
and comment that they're not getting out of their truck to load a vehicles due to the dangerous situation.....
They are being SMART!
Don't be tempted to believe that it's ever a safe bet to dive into traffic to get a car loaded because a few drivers here want to call cautious operators "pu***es" because they choose to be safe over sorry.
Play it safe. Make it home at night to your wife/gf, kids, family. Live to tow another day.
Following the advice of some of the comments here about "only a p***y won't get out in traffic on the interstate to load a vehicle" is going to cost you one of these days.
There isn't a state out there that's going to penalize you for calling the highway patrol to request a lane block for you to load. And if you have an employer that ridicules you for doing so.. You need to go work for a different company.

customer: i have a complaint your driver couldnt transport my 3 children and i because he had a backpack and a cooler with him! thats unprofessional and sloppy! what do you have to say for yourselves?!
me: well ma'am my drivers drive at minnimum 14 hrs with no lunch hour guaranteed and no guarantee that calls will take him away from his area so they must plan accordingly. the cooler is so he can eat on the go because customers dont care if he hasnt eaten all day they care that he said he's be there in 30 minutes, the backpack is for additional clothing in case he gets dirty cold or wet and for anything he may need in case a call turns into a overnighter. did i effectively answer your question?
customer: well i waited 30 minutes and now im on the side of the road with my kids isnt that ILLEGAL to leave me stranded?!
me: no ma'am but having children under a certain age and weight limit not properly secured in a carseat is and he cannot per our company policy have them up front sitting on adults lap its a safety issue as well as a ticket violation. we can offer you an uber code to help you get home if you would like its not common practice but we try to assist anyway we can.
customer: no you left me stranded and thats what im going to report and im going to make sure i do a review and give it low marks, im very well known in my community i know many people you should have been more helpful im about to rain down doom on your company! (click)

2 hours later..... customer: you need to give me that uber code right now! we are still stranded!
me: i am so sorry code is only valid while tow in progress its to far outside the end of service, may i suggest you call on of your many friends of doom to assist you?

long story short ... dispatcher looking for job, has a little bit of a smart mouth lol (no not really, well not about the job part lol)
