There’s nothing more expensive than a cheap Audi. 😂

This one was a pretty good reminder of why that saying exists.

Oil leaks, a cracked grille, a cracked taillight lens, loud tapping at idle, and enough fault codes stored in the system to keep someone busy for a while.

Individually, some of these issues might not seem like a big deal, but start adding everything up and that cheap Audi can get expensive real quick.

I’m all for finding a good deal, but sometimes the cheapest car ends up costing you the most.

This is one of those cars that checked out beautifully during the inspection. Mechanically, there really wasn’t much to complain about.

But once we started looking closely at the exterior, we found subtle evidence of previous paintwork along one side of the vehicle. Nothing that immediately jumps out at you, and honestly, most people probably wouldn’t notice it.

The interesting part? The Carfax showed no reported accidents.

Now, that doesn’t automatically mean the car was in an accident or that someone is hiding something. Paintwork can happen for plenty of reasons. But it’s still something I’d want to know about before spending my money.

A clean Carfax is great, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. That’s why we inspect the actual car, not just its history report.

There’s just something satisfying about working on cars like this RD1 CR-V. Simple, straightforward, and always fun to see how much a good suspension setup can change the way a car looks and feels.

I’ve always had a soft spot for this era of Honda, so jobs like these never really feel like work.

For its age, this thing is in pretty rough shape. Between the overall condition and the number of fluid leaks we found, it’s a good reminder that low mileage doesn’t always mean a better car.

I’d much rather see a vehicle with higher mileage that’s been properly maintained than one with low mileage that’s been neglected.

Mileage is just one piece of the puzzle. How a car was maintained and treated over the years matters just as much, if not more.

Don’t let a low number on the odometer convince you you’re getting a good car.

Garage On The Go is still nowhere near where I want it to be. We’ve had so many ideas, some we’ve recently been able to bring to life, and others we’re still working toward.

It’s pretty cool looking back at where we started and seeing how much has changed. Especially knowing there’s still so much more to do.

NEW METHOD DROPPED. Apparently we’re Photoshopping Carfax reports now. 😭

A client booked a PPI and sent me a copy of the Carfax provided by the seller. It showed 85,000 miles and no accidents.

I always pull my own Carfax, regardless of what the seller provides.

Same VIN. Completely different story.

The report I pulled showed 231,000 miles AND an accident on record.

That’s a 146,000 mile discrepancy. 💀

I’ve seen some creative ways to misrepresent a used car, but potentially Photoshopping a Carfax is a new one for me.

This is exactly why you verify everything independently before handing over your money.

Would you have even thought to question a Carfax sent directly by the seller?

Buying a car out of state can be a gamble, and this one came with a few surprises. 😂

It was pretty obvious the car had taken a significant hit to the front end, and whoever repaired it decided to get creative with both headlight harnesses.

Neither the headlights nor the turn signals worked.

What I initially thought would be a fairly straightforward wiring repair turned into a much bigger project. Most of the connector pins weren’t even in the correct locations, so I had to go through and correct the wiring on both sides.

Personally, I would’ve preferred replacing the entire front end harness, but the cost was simply too high for the customer. We worked with what we had and got everything functioning again.

This is one of those repairs where fixing someone else’s work takes significantly longer than doing it correctly the first time.

And another reminder of why getting a car inspected before buying it, especially out of state, can save you a massive headache.

Maybe on a car from the 70s we can have a conversation about oil leaks being normal. 😂

But on a modern vehicle? Absolutely not.

Some engines are notorious for leaking oil from certain places. Valve covers, timing covers, oil pans, you name it. But just because a problem is common doesn’t mean it’s normal or acceptable.

There’s also a difference between a minor seep and an active leak. Not every oil seep requires immediate repair, but that doesn’t mean we should pretend it isn’t there.

I hear “that’s normal for these cars” way too often, especially when someone is trying to sell one.

Common doesn’t mean normal. And normal doesn’t mean you should ignore it.

Dodge Viper PPI, a car I’ve admired for as long as I can remember.

And somehow, even a Viper manages to have the most common dodge problems imaginable. 😂

Slightly leaking A/C line O rings, out of adjustment clutch pedal and broken hardware covers on the door panels. Nothing particularly alarming, just a couple of reminders that it’s still a Dodge.

But man, what an absolutely rowdy machine. There’s something special about a car that makes absolutely no effort to be civilized.

One of my favorite parts of doing these inspections is occasionally getting behind the wheel of something I’ve admired for years.

Let’s say you find a used car that checks out in almost every way. It drives well, has no major mechanical issues, and is otherwise in great condition.

The only things it needs are a new battery and an alignment.

Nothing crazy, but the dealership refuses to address either issue or negotiate on the price.

Are you still buying the car and handling those repairs yourself, or are you walking away on principle?

I’m curious where everyone draws the line.
