“Clean the Root, Not Just the Smell”
Psalm 51:10 (KJV)
“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”
When the Smell Won’t Go Away
Have you ever gotten into a vehicle and noticed a bad odor? Maybe it smells like spoiled food, mildew, smoke, or something you just cannot identify.
You grab an air freshener and hang it from the rearview mirror. You spray some deodorizer. You roll down the windows and let the fresh air come in.
For a little while, the smell seems to disappear. But a few hours later, there it is again!
Why? Because you treated the smell, but you never removed the source.
If something has spilled under the seat, if mold is growing in the carpet, or if something is rotting in the trunk, no amount of perfume will permanently solve the problem.
Our lives can be the same way!
We spend so much time trying to make things look right on the outside that we sometimes forget God wants to clean us up on the inside.
🗣️You Must Find the Source of the Problem‼️
When I professionally detail a vehicle, I do not just wipe down the dashboard and shine the tires. I look for the source of the odor. I lift the floor mats, inspect the carpet, check underneath the seats, and look in places most people never think to look.
Why❓
Because the problem may be hiding where nobody can see it.
Jesus said in Matthew 23:26:
“Cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.”
Sometimes we are quick to point out everybody else's problems, but slow to examine our own hearts.
We want God to fix our attitude, but we do not want to address our pride.
We want peace in our homes, but we refuse to deal with our anger.
We want healthy relationships, but we keep carrying , , , and old wounds.
We keep asking God to change our circumstances when He may be calling us to examine what is happening inside us.
You cannot permanently fix what you refuse to uncover.
The first step toward healing is allowing God to reveal the root of the problem.
🗣️You Must Remove What Is Causing the Odor
When detailing a vehicle, sometimes the carpet must be pulled back. Sometimes the seats must be removed. Sometimes the source must be scrubbed, extracted, or replaced.
That process is not always comfortable, but it is necessary.
And when God begins working on our hearts, He may uncover things we would rather keep hidden.
He may reveal resentment we have carried for years. He may show us habits that are destroying our peace. He may remind us of apologies we need to make or sins we need to confess.
Hebrews 12:1 tells us to lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily besets us.
Notice that some things are sins we must turn away from, while other things are weights we must stop carrying.
You cannot keep feeding bitterness and expect to walk in forgiveness.
You cannot keep entertaining destructive habits and expect to experience freedom.
You cannot keep pouring the same dirty water into your life and wonder why everything still smells the same.
Sometimes the blessing is not God adding something new to your life. Sometimes the blessing is God helping you remove what has been poisoning it.
God does not just want to cover your mess; He wants to transform your heart.
🗣️Let God Do a Deep Cleaning
A good detailer knows that a quick spray is not the same as a deep cleaning.
The surface may look clean, but dirt can remain deep in the fibers. A stubborn odor may require special treatment, patience, and time.
Likewise, some spiritual problems cannot be solved with a quick Sunday-morning shout or a few encouraging words.
We need prayer. We need the Word of God. We need repentance. We need accountability. And sometimes we need wise, godly counsel.
David understood this when he prayed
Psalm 51:10:
“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”
David did not simply ask God to make him look better in front of people. He asked God to change him from the inside out.
That is the prayer we need to pray!
“Lord, do not just change what people see. Change what You see when You look at me.”
“Lord, do not just help me hide my anger. Teach me how to surrender it.”
“Lord, do not just help me forget my past. Heal me so my past no longer controls my present.”
The deeper the cleaning, the more complete the restoration can be.
And remember, God does not expose our wounds to shame us. He brings them into the light so healing can begin.
🗣️Stop Spraying Air Freshener on a Root Problem
You can put the finest fragrance in a dirty vehicle, but sooner or later the underlying odor may return.
And you can dress up on Sunday, smile in everybody's face, sing in the choir, preach a sermon, and still have something inside that needs God's attention.
But the good news is that God specializes in cleaning what we cannot clean by ourselves!
He can forgive the sin. He can heal the wound. He can break the cycle. He can renew the mind. He can restore the heart.
So stop asking only, “Lord, make my life smell better.”
Start praying, “Lord, show me where the smell is coming from!”
If it is pride, help me surrender it.
If it is unforgiveness, help me release it.
If it is sin, help me repent of it.
If it is a wound, help me heal from it.
If it is a destructive habit, help me break free from it.
Because when God cleans the root, the fruit of our lives can begin to change.
Final thought: Don't settle for a temporary cover-up when God is offering a lasting transformation.
Let Him get underneath the surface. Let Him search your heart. Let Him remove what does not belong. And let Him make you clean from the inside out‼️
