By: Peter Cuerto
The SMKA - Santa Maria Karting Association held its second club race of the 2024 Season on Sunday, June 16, at the club facility in Santa Maria, California. It was a beautiful, warm day with a nice breeze to temper it. This was the fourth event of the season, a make-up date from the April rainout. It marked the midpoint of the seven-race season.
There were six divisions battling for championship points and a slew of trophies at the competition.
This was the largest division of the meet and was loaded with very fast and capable young racers from Northern and Southern California to challenge our young local talent. Visitor #1 Wiley Lee earned the fast qualifier award by picking up a full second on his time to best Michael Dean III. Visitors Tre Sanders, Lyon McPhail, and Lucas Melo rounded out the top 5 in qualifying with strong efforts. The heat race, semi-main event, and Feature win were captured by a rebounding Michael Dean with a fast and determined Wiley Lee on the hunt all afternoon. Lucas Melo, Lyon McPhail and Arroyo Grande wheelman Anthony Tost filled out the podium. Tre Saunders was hot after the top 5, followed by Spencer Antle, Quick Kingston Baile, Zephran Decater, all-around athlete Rylee Rains, and the Golden Deuce of Preston Bourtz. The Kid Kart division is a very popular introductory class (ages 5-8 years old) that featured 9 up and coming racers.
The LO206 Junior 1 Pilot Division (Red Slide) is the next step in the developmental classes. Nipomo’s Everett “Rev” Blackford (106) backed up a great practice session with his first Fast Time Qualifier award. Mason Brody (7) from the Riverside area took advantage of a little mistake and captured the heat race win. Brody went on to win the semi-main event and finish first in the feature. Rev Blackford captured his career best effort and finished second to Brody in the feature by driving very fast and smooth laps. Cameron Buyo (99) earned a third place while Santa Barbara racer Kirin Baille and Arroyo Grande’s Bennett Ginevra balanced out the podium.
The Junior 2 LO206 (age 12-15) division saw Lompoc’s Hank Webster as the only entry. He drove well, albeit solo, and captured a fast time and all of the event wins.
The LO206 Senior (age 16+) division hit the track with a strong 8 kart field. Santa Barbara’s Kevin Baille (78) started the day off with another fastest lap in qualifications. San Luis Obispo’s Conner Tol (18) won a very hotly contested heatrace by out dueling Kevin Baille, Nipomo’s Dustin Gotchal (47), Santa Maria’s John Ikola (90), Santa Barbara’s Andres Malovos (31) and Southern California HotshoeDominick Adams. The semi feature had Tol and Baille swap top spots, with Ikola, Adams, Nick Silver (24) and Malovos rounding out the top 6. Gotchal made hard contact with the barriers and did not finish the semi main withdrawal in the feature. In another hotly contested Feature Event where Tol and Baille swapped top spots until Baille overcooked it in a corner, made contact with Tol, and spun in front of a handful of karts. Tol was challenged by Ikola and Malovos to claim the podium. Baille recovered for a fourth place finish, edging out the fast but slowing Adams. Silver, Larry Fisher (23) and Gotchal rounded out the field. .
Again, the 2 cycle Junior KA 100) saw the battle of Santa Maria’s own Riley Samiago (834) and Dayton Samiago (854) race in a high speed duel all day long. Dayton took top honors in the heat race while Riley came out on top in the semi main event and feature but both drove their best races of the year so far, standing 1 and 2 on the podium. Riley was very excited about his driving performance and how his kart was prepared. Dayton had a stellar day also running his best and most consistent laps of the season.
The 2 Cycle 100 CC Senior Division had Santa Maria’s own Brad Samiago (79) earn the big trophy after setting fast time, winning the heat race, semi, and feature sweeping the day. Finishing strong was Chad Samiago, Santa Maria (458), and Ryan Dale, Nipomo (45), completing the podium.
In all, it was a very well run and fun club event. The Santa Maria Karting Association is a club dating back to 1959 at the back side of the Santa Maria Airport.
