Santa Maria Karting Association Race Recap - June 16, 2024
By: Peter Cuerto

The SMKA - Santa Maria Karting Association held its second club race of the 2024 Season on Sunday, June 16, at the club facility in Santa Maria, California. It was a beautiful, warm day with a nice breeze to temper it. This was the fourth event of the season, a make-up date from the April rainout. It marked the midpoint of the seven-race season.
There were six divisions battling for championship points and a slew of trophies at the competition.
This was the largest division of the meet and was loaded with very fast and capable young racers from Northern and Southern California to challenge our young local talent. Visitor #1 Wiley Lee earned the fast qualifier award by picking up a full second on his time to best Michael Dean III. Visitors Tre Sanders, Lyon McPhail, and Lucas Melo rounded out the top 5 in qualifying with strong efforts. The heat race, semi-main event, and Feature win were captured by a rebounding Michael Dean with a fast and determined Wiley Lee on the hunt all afternoon. Lucas Melo, Lyon McPhail and Arroyo Grande wheelman Anthony Tost filled out the podium. Tre Saunders was hot after the top 5, followed by Spencer Antle, Quick Kingston Baile, Zephran Decater, all-around athlete Rylee Rains, and the Golden Deuce of Preston Bourtz. The Kid Kart division is a very popular introductory class (ages 5-8 years old) that featured 9 up and coming racers.
The LO206 Junior 1 Pilot Division (Red Slide) is the next step in the developmental classes. Nipomo’s Everett “Rev” Blackford (106) backed up a great practice session with his first Fast Time Qualifier award. Mason Brody (7) from the Riverside area took advantage of a little mistake and captured the heat race win. Brody went on to win the semi-main event and finish first in the feature. Rev Blackford captured his career best effort and finished second to Brody in the feature by driving very fast and smooth laps. Cameron Buyo (99) earned a third place while Santa Barbara racer Kirin Baille and Arroyo Grande’s Bennett Ginevra balanced out the podium.
The Junior 2 LO206 (age 12-15) division saw Lompoc’s Hank Webster as the only entry. He drove well, albeit solo, and captured a fast time and all of the event wins.
The LO206 Senior (age 16+) division hit the track with a strong 8 kart field. Santa Barbara’s Kevin Baille (78) started the day off with another fastest lap in qualifications. San Luis Obispo’s Conner Tol (18) won a very hotly contested heatrace by out dueling Kevin Baille, Nipomo’s Dustin Gotchal (47), Santa Maria’s John Ikola (90), Santa Barbara’s Andres Malovos (31) and Southern California HotshoeDominick Adams. The semi feature had Tol and Baille swap top spots, with Ikola, Adams, Nick Silver (24) and Malovos rounding out the top 6. Gotchal made hard contact with the barriers and did not finish the semi main withdrawal in the feature. In another hotly contested Feature Event where Tol and Baille swapped top spots until Baille overcooked it in a corner, made contact with Tol, and spun in front of a handful of karts. Tol was challenged by Ikola and Malovos to claim the podium. Baille recovered for a fourth place finish, edging out the fast but slowing Adams. Silver, Larry Fisher (23) and Gotchal rounded out the field. .
Again, the 2 cycle Junior KA 100) saw the battle of Santa Maria’s own Riley Samiago (834) and Dayton Samiago (854) race in a high speed duel all day long. Dayton took top honors in the heat race while Riley came out on top in the semi main event and feature but both drove their best races of the year so far, standing 1 and 2 on the podium. Riley was very excited about his driving performance and how his kart was prepared. Dayton had a stellar day also running his best and most consistent laps of the season.
The 2 Cycle 100 CC Senior Division had Santa Maria’s own Brad Samiago (79) earn the big trophy after setting fast time, winning the heat race, semi, and feature sweeping the day. Finishing strong was Chad Samiago, Santa Maria (458), and Ryan Dale, Nipomo (45), completing the podium.
In all, it was a very well run and fun club event. The Santa Maria Karting Association is a club dating back to 1959 at the back side of the Santa Maria Airport. SMKA - Santa Maria Karting Association Race Recap - June 2, 2024
By: Peter Cuerto

The Santa Maria Karting Association held its third club race of the 2024 Season on Sunday, June 2nd, at the club facility in Santa Maria, California. It was a breezy, cool, overcast day on the Central Coast of California, but it soon heated up with excellent competition, with seven divisions battling for their trophies at the end of the day.

Kid Kart Division
The Kid Kart division, an introductory class for ages 5-8, featured 9 up-and-coming racers. #4 Michael Dean III paced the group all day with a fast qualifier award, winning the heat race, premain event, and the feature race to take home the big prize. He was chased by a very fast and rapidly improving #91 Anthony Toste. Santa Maria’s all-around racer and athlete Rylee Rains finished 3rd in the feature. Preston Boertz ( #2) impressed everyone with a solid day in 4th place in his golden deuce after being relentless in close quarter racing with Iver Majzoub ( #74) and Spencer Antle ( #30). Zephram Decater (23) and Aria Lauer (114) brought home the field to earn their prizes. The determined Kingston Baille (33) had a great day, crossing the finish line 3rd in the main event only to have a part failure in post-race inspection.

LO206 Junior 1 (age 7-12) Pilot Division (Red Slide)
Nipomo’s Austin Lauer (141) couldn’t be restrained as he won his heats and feature event in his VRL chassied kart. Setting the fast time in this class was “Rev” Blackford in his family-prepared CRG chassis kart, followed in hot pursuit by Kirin Baille in his DDX-wrenched VRL Sapphire chassis. All three karts were powered by Big Dog LO206 restricted motors.

Junior 1 LO206 (age 7-12) Division (Green Slide)
#77 Ayden Kirkpatrick's unstoppable attack set the pace in qualifying, the heat races, and the main event in his Big Dog-powered VRL Chassis. Austin happens to be one of the fastest Junior 1 drivers in the state. He was followed by Ari Majzoub in 2nd and Santa Ynez’s pride and joy Lochlan Whalen with a strong 3rd place finish. Santa Barbara’s very fast Otto Butler had a good day spoiled by an engine failure, and the replacement motor failed post-race inspection to be relegated to the back of the field.

Junior 2 LO206 (age 12-15) Division
The most heated and spirited racing of the day saw Nipomo’s Kaleb Chenault and Lompoc’s Hank Webster duel it out. Chenault was the quick qualifier award winner for his third week in a row in the Chenauld Family Racing (12) VLR Emerald Chassis. Webster was not to be outdone and bested Chenault in great side-by-side close contact racing by the two skilled competitors and good friends in the heats and premain. The main event was another dogged affair as they worked and toiled until just past the midpoint when Chenault had a seat stay break in the heat of battle and was unable to mount another worthy attack on Webster’s family-prepared (397) VRL Emerald Chassis, finishing .3 seconds behind in a somewhat anticlimactic end.

LO206 Senior (age 16+) Division
A strong 9-kart field included past IKF Two-Time Grand National Champion, Santa Maria’s own Larry Fisher (23). Santa Barbara’s Kevin Baille (78) started the day off with the fastest lap in qualifications but had to start the day in the rear of the field for his heat races in his DDX/Danny Flynn-wrenched VRL Emerald Chassis. He battled and fought his way through the competition to end his day on the top step of the podium. Connor Solis (22) had an impressive outing too, starting the day mid-pack and earning the second step of the podium. San Luis Obispo’s Conner Tol (18) overcame troubles from an earlier heat race tangle to have a strong P3 podium finish. Nicholas Silver (24), Dustin Gotchal (47), and Arizona’s Kirk Robertson (71) finished 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively. Devin Decanter (10) rounded out the field running at the end. The very quick and hard racing David Ikola (36) broke in the feature along with Larry Fisher to round out the finishing order.

2 Cycle Junior KA 100 Division
Santa Maria’s own Riley Samiago (834) and Dayton Samiago (854) raced in a high-speed duel all day long. Riley came out on top in the heats and feature, but both had to overcome a main event tangle to pass several Senior division karts to earn their respective podium finishes. The Samiago clan are long-time club supporters and club racers.

2 Cycle Senior Division
Andres Malovos (31) took home the big trophy after passing third place finisher Chad Samiago (458) and runner-up veteran John Ortega (14) in his very fast and well-prepared Tony Kart to earn their podium finishes. Racing dad Shadi Majzoub crossed the start-finish line in 4th place after battling clutch problems earlier in the event. Rounding out this strong field of racers were Ryan Dale (45) and Brad Samiago, who both faced mechanical woes in the feature.

Overall, it was a very well-run and fun club event. The Santa Maria Karting Association is a club that dates back to 1959 and is located on the backside of the Santa Maria Airport. The club encourages and welcomes participation and fun for every age and experience level. To get assistance in joining the club and enjoy the benefits of membership, please refer to the website and page.
