On this day in 1896 Mr. Walter Arnold was issued the world’s first recorded speeding ticket in an automobile for driving through Paddock Wood, Kent, UK, at 8 miles per hour, when the speed limit was only 2 miles per hour. Additionally, drivers were supposed to have a person walk in front of their vehicle and wave red flags, warning others that an automobile was coming, which he did not have. An officer on a bicycle chased him for five miles before being able to stop Mr. Arnold.

1896 Benz Velo, perhaps similar to the car that Mr. Arnold was driving when he was pulled over.

Myth: Let your engine warm up several minutes before driving.

Reality: That might have been good advice once, but modern engines warm up more quickly when they’re actually being driven.

What you should do instead: Get in, start the car, and start driving, The sooner the engine warms up, the sooner it reaches its maximum efficiency and delivers the best fuel economy and performance. But don’t rev the engine high over the first few miles while it’s warming up.
