This 2012 Mazda Miata has a slightly different setup than the one we remember working on before. The rain gutter section has two clips in each corner holding it in place.

When replacing a soft top, you'll also work with the rain rail, fabric attachments, and tension cables. Common tools include a 10 mm socket and ratchet, trim-removal tool, screwdrivers, drill, and rivet gun.

Take your time with the old rain rail if you're planning to reuse it.

Working on a Mazda Miata soft top and unsure how the rain rail goes back on?

The rain rail helps channel water toward the drains behind the seats. During reassembly, its position and attachment matter. The correct rivets and retaining hardware also depend on the specific connection, so don't substitute fasteners without checking the proper installation requirements.

Did you know clogged convertible-top drains can allow water to get inside your car?

While working on this Mazda MX-5 Miata, Eliseo discovered a drain filter sponge that needs attention during servicing. Dirt, dust, and other debris can collect in the drainage system and restrict the flow of water.

That's why checking and cleaning the filters before reassembling the interior is an important step in this job.

Here's one thing we discovered while working on this Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Convertible tops have drainage systems to help direct water away. In this case, Eliseo points out the drainage holes and shows the sponge underneath.

It's a small detail, but it's worth knowing about when inspecting a convertible's interior.

When working on a Mazda MX-5 convertible, you have to decide whether to work around the existing components or remove them for better access.

On this project, I removed the roll bar to reach the gutters and clear out accumulated dirt and mud. The removal took about 10 minutes, but I still need to put everything back together before I can judge the full process.

At EM Upholstery Technology, I like to understand the work involved before deciding which approach makes the most sense.

One of the tricky parts of replacing a Mazda Miata convertible top is getting access to the tight spaces around the rear bar and interior trim.

Since we were already taking the seats out for a leather interior upgrade, Eliseo decided to remove the surrounding plastics and the whole bar to create more working room.

There are plenty of clips to watch out for, especially the ones that can break if you pull them the wrong way.

We're getting this 2012 Mazda Miata ready for a leather upholstery upgrade. Removing the seats sounds easy, but the electrical connectors and small plastic tabs require a little patience.
