Want a quick look at the condition of your trailer’s gel coat? Grab a flashlight.

A bright, sharp white reflection usually points to healthy gel coat. A yellow tint can indicate medium oxidation, while little to no reflection may mean the oxidation has become heavy.

It’s a simple visual check, but we also use a gloss meter on every trailer to get an objective reading before beginning our work.

One of the questions we hear most is:

"Can't I just keep waxing my trailer?"

The short answer? You can—but fiberglass gel coat, especially in hot climates, presents some challenges.
Every time your trailer sits in the sun, the gel coat absorbs heat while UV rays constantly work to break down the surface. Add rain, road grime, bug residue, washing, and normal travel, and traditional wax can lose its effectiveness much sooner than most owners expect.

That means less protection and more time spent reapplying wax just to keep up.

A ceramic coating is different.

Instead of sitting on the surface like wax, a professional ceramic coating chemically bonds to the gel coat, creating a durable sacrificial layer that stands up much better to UV exposure, heat, bugs, road grime, black streaks, and everyday use.

That doesn't mean it's maintenance-free—it still needs regular washing and periodic maintenance—but it provides long-term protection that traditional wax simply wasn't designed to deliver.

If your goal is spending less time waxing and more time enjoying your trailer, ceramic coating is worth considering.

Your trailer picks up a lot more than miles during travel season.

Oxidation doesn’t always give you a slow warning.

On fiberglass trailers, the gel coat can look “pretty good” one season and be a completely different story the next. That’s why we use a gloss meter on every trailer we inspect. It gives us an actual number for the condition of the gel coat, not just a guess by eye.

A trailer reading around 72 may still look decent, but if it’s left unprotected through a season of sun, heat, road grime, bugs, and weather, that number can fall fast. Once oxidation starts, it doesn’t casually creep in it sets in fast.

That’s when the trailer gets harder to clean, the surface starts looking chalky or yellowed, and restoration becomes more work than basic protection would have been. Protecting healthy gel coat is always easier than trying to bring faded gel coat back.

After a good camping trip, your trailer deserves a good wash.
Even a short trip can leave behind bugs, road grime, dust, black streaks, tree debris, and water spots. Those little things add up fast, especially when your trailer sits outside between trips.
That’s one of the reasons trailer owners love having a ceramic coating. It helps protect the gel coat and makes bugs, grime, and streaks easier to wash away, so cleanup after camping trips feels a lot less like a chore.
