Why choose a specialist over a general mechanic?

When your vehicle has a complex driveline vibration, you don't want a general mechanic guessing at the fix. You want a master of the craft.

At Driveshaft Specialist, we don't do brakes, tune-ups, or inspections. We do driveshafts only.

By focusing 100% of our energy on a single component, we can offer:

Unmatched diagnostic accuracy for stubborn vehicle shakes.

Ultra-fast 48-hour custom builds.

Precision high-speed electronic balancing that general shops can't replicate.

Don't settle for general auto repair when it comes to your drivetrain. Trust the team that lives and breathes driveshafts every single day.

To get the right driveshaft part, you must measure your universal joints (U-joints) using a caliper rather than a tape measure. Precision is vital because common U-joint sizes differ by mere fractions of an inch. Getting these dimensions right prevents high-speed vehicle vibrations and premature component failure.

Step 1: Clean and Identify the Snap Ring Style

Before pulling out your tools, wipe away all grease, rust, and dirt from the yoke and the U-joint. Next, look closely at how the bearing caps are secured.

Outside Lock (External Snap Rings): The snap rings sit in grooves on the outer edges of the yoke ears or rest on top of the caps. The bearing caps themselves have smooth outer walls.

Inside Lock (Internal Snap Rings): The snap rings sit in machined grooves cut directly into the walls of the bearing caps or inside the yoke ears.

Step 2: Take Your Measurements

Do not measure the center cross/trunnion itself. Instead, fully compress the bearing caps onto the joint using a vice or C-clamp to get an accurate reading.

Measure Cap Diameter: Use your caliper to measure the exact outside diameter of the bearing cap. Measure adjacent caps to check if they match.

Measure Outside Lock Width: If you have external snap rings, measure the total overall width from the flat outside face of one cap to the flat outside face of the opposite cap.

Measure Inside Lock Width: If you have internal snap rings, measure the distance from the outer edge of one snap ring groove to the outer edge of the opposite groove. Do not include the full height of the cap tips.

Step 3: Match Your Data to a Standard Series

Once you have your decimal measurements, you can identify your standard drivetrain series.

This '70 Cuda came into the shop suffering from incorrect driveline angles and a driveshaft that was too short. We corrected the geometry and built a custom-length replacement to handle the power safely. It was an absolute pleasure working on this piece of American muscle!

Pinion Yoke Maintenance
Replacement Needed: If the tabs on your pinion yoke are broken or worn, replace the pinion yoke immediately.
Wear and Tear: Worn tabs can cause side-to-side movement of the U-joint, even with a high-quality U-joint. This wear can lead to high-speed vibrations (50-70+ mph).
Prevent Further Damage: A vibrating driveshaft accelerates wear on the tabs, so addressing the issue promptly is crucial.
