EDUCATE YOURSELF ON - GAP - it is not insurance unless you get it from an insurance company. If you get it from a car dealership it’s a financial service NOT PROTECTED by insurance regulations. GAP in all cases only “Kicks in” if the insurance company pays you fairly. It doesn’t automatically cover any amount of short payment.

GAP coverage (Guaranteed Asset Protection) is generally treated as an insurance-type product, but there’s a wrinkle that matters.

What it is:
GAP covers the difference (“gap”) between what you owe on a car loan/lease and what the car is actually worth (actual cash value) if it’s totaled or stolen.

Why the confusion:

* When you buy GAP through an auto insurer (like Progressive or State Farm), it is insurance—regulated like any other auto coverage.
* When you buy it through a dealership or lender, it’s often structured as a waiver or add-on contract, not technically “insurance,” even though it works similarly.

Bottom line:

* Functionally: it protects you financially after a total loss.
* Legally: it can be insurance or a contractual waiver, depending on who sells it.

He called me a big baller after I got him $17,270 more for his total loss 2018 Gand design recreational vehicle momentum toy hauler. His insurance company was supposed to be Progressive, but when it came to replacing his trailer they were quite digressive. When he asked for more money, the adjuster got really aggressive. Progressive said “based on our research using a company we pay millions a year to, we think we only owe you $52,980. He knew right away this offer was shady. He hired me in a flash because he knew I’d get him more cash. They gave me the name of their independent appraiser. We have worked well before and I didn’t foresee any issues getting the customer a whole lot more. After the discussion we done I knew I had won. We actually quickly agreed with each other’s value which was kinda nifty, we said the toy hauler was actually worth $70,250. Never trust the person who owes you money to determine how much money they owe you.
