There aren’t many places left like Dave Marcis’ race shop.

Dave built his own cars, worked on his own equipment and somehow managed to race against and beat teams with a whole lot more money and manpower.

Unfortunately, Dave could use the racing community’s help right now.

While he was out of town recently, his home in Arden, North Carolina was broken into and several personal items were stolen, including watches, fi****ms, jewelry and irreplaceable memorabilia.

But the value of some of what was taken can’t be measured in dollars.

Dave lost his wife Helen earlier this year after they spent more than six decades together. Some of the items stolen from his home had belonged to Helen or were gifts given to Dave and Helen over the years. Those aren’t things you can just go out and replace.

Some of the stolen pieces are personalized with Dave’s name and racing history, which hopefully makes them easier to recognize if somebody tries to sell them.

Keep your eyes open. Facebook Marketplace, pawn shops, swap meets, racing groups, anywhere this stuff might surface.

The NASCAR community is pretty damn good at finding things when everybody starts looking.

Let’s find Dave’s stuff.

And let’s find the people who took it.

Bugsy's Auto Repair is looking for a full-time helper to join our shop.

This is an entry-level position with room to grow and a great opportunity for someone who wants to learn a skilled trade. No professional experience is required. Basic knowledge of hand and power tools is a plus, but we're willing to teach someone who shows up ready to work and learn.

What you'll be doing:

Assisting mechanics and technicians
Truck teardown and reassembly
Sanding and bodywork prep
Assisting with welding and fabrication
Washing and cleaning trucks
Parts runs
Shop cleanup and organization
Helping wherever you're needed

We work primarily on heavy trucks, and because we're a small, family-owned shop, you'll get exposure to a little bit of everything — mechanical repair, welding, fabrication, bodywork and paint. You won't be stuck doing the same thing every day.

We're looking for someone who:

Shows up every day and on time
Isn't afraid to get dirty
Can listen and follow directions
Wants to learn
Can stay off their phone and stay busy
Has reliable transportation
Is at least 16 years old

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM-4:00 PM
Starting Pay: $17.00/hour and up, depending on experience

This can become a career.

Both of our current department heads started at Bugsy's as helpers. We've also had helpers go on to become well-paid welders in the shipyard and construction industries.

If you put in the work and want to learn, this position can lead to becoming a full technician with us or give you hands-on experience that can open doors throughout the heavy-truck and skilled-trades industries.

This is also a unique opportunity for someone who wants to get involved in motorsports. You'll work full-time at Bugsy's Auto Repair, with opportunities to work with Mullins Racing and gain hands-on racing experience as well.

We're a small family shop. We work hard, stay busy, and do a huge variety of work. We're looking for someone who wants an opportunity to learn and isn't afraid to start at the bottom and work their way up.

I got my copy of Mark Martin’s new Never Lift book yesterday and opened right up to this picture of his old shop in Batesville Arkansas. Having actually seen the place in person makes it so much cooler and I can’t wait to read it.

This shop is shown in our “Mark Martin Hometown History Tour” video. Which was the first ever video I did of that format and completely happened by random chance after we were done filming the museum video. That impromptu trip to Arkansas in October 2021 really kickstarted everything I’ve done racing history related since then.

Do we have any structural engineers in the greater NC racing hub region?

I’m planning on finishing the attic space of the 30x40 detached shop to be my office and workspace. Before the garage is finished and insulated I want to explore options to add a shed roof dormer on the backside so I can see out over the hill and get the morning sun.

In a perfect world the dormer would be open floor space area where I could put my desk to leave the main floor space unobstructed but I do not know how feasible that is. Worst case the trusses can be left unmodified and have some other type of window there just for the east facing light and have the “feel” of a larger room. If money were no
object I would add gable dormers on the front side too.

I mean the attic area is not small by any means.. the flat part of the attic area ceiling is probably 8.5 feet. BUT if I’m ever going to make it awesome in there I need to to the big stuff before the rest is finished.

Someday I’d like to have it be set up with a nice sim rig, tv for watching races, hang up my memorabilia all that stuff. External stairs and deck off one side so I don’t have to take up floor space in the shop. Make it a place I enjoy being in.

I have never attempted any sort of construction project that can’t be done ourselves with some help from friends. So this is all new territory for me.

Kerry Earnhardt remembers meeting his father, Dale Earnhardt, and his siblings, Kelley and Dale Jr., for the very first time.
