How the Automobile Shaped America—Part 2
The First Car Made in America

While the first self-propelled vehicles originated in Germany and France, American soon caught on to the automobile idea. Charles, a bicycle maker, and his brother, Frank, Duryea are widely credited with building the first gasoline powered car in America.

The brothers actually bought an old horse-drawn buggy, added a 4 HP, single cylinder gasoline engine, and took the vehicle for a road test in Chicopee, Massachusetts, on September 21, 1893.

The brothers are known for several firsts in the automobile world. In 1895, they entered a second Duryea Wagon in the first automobile race in American sponsored by the Chicago Herald Times. Frank drove the car through the 54 mile course and finished first by a margin of 75 minutes.

The brothers went on to start the Duryea Motor Wagon Company in 1896. That first year they hand-built 13 cars making the Duryea Wagon the first-ever commercially produced vehicle. Although the brothers eventually split, Charles continued to produce Duryea vehicles until 1917.

Finally, the Duryea Wagon is noted for another first—the first known automobile accident. A Duryea driver hit a bicyclist in New York and spent a night in jail.

How the Automobile Shaped America—Part 1
The World's First Car

As we lead up to celebrating American’s 250th birthday on July 4, 1st Choice Autos is bringing to you a series of posts on How the Automobile Shaped America over the last 130 years. Today we look at the world’s first gas-powered automobile. Check back each evening for a new installment.

Although, America quickly became the dominant maker of automobiles in the early 1900s, the idea of a self-propelled vehicle really began in Germany and France. In 1769 a military engineer in France, named Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot, built the world’s first steam-powered vehicle—a three-wheeled artillery tractor. It went all of 2 MPH.

However, the world’s first gas-powered automobile was built by the German engineer, Karl Benz, in 1885 and patented on January 9, 1886. It was called the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, and it looked like large motor-powered tricycle.
